Paradise Awaits in Sunny Tortuga
Tortuga is an undeveloped area so you won’t find any modern tourist attractions or sites in this region. The majority of travelers head here to enjoy some of the natural attractions and paradise-like setting of this island. Tortuga Island is blessed with several beaches including Point Saline which sits on the western tip. This beach is perfect for picnicking, sunbathing, and just people watching. The beaches of Tortuga are also well-suited for watching the sunrise or sunset on any given day, especially during the summer months.
Make your way to the southeastern coast to see some historic attractions and sites. Basse-Terre sits on the southeastern coast and is home to the Fort de la Roche, a French fort that was built in 1630. You can take a self-guided tour around this fort to admire the architecture and see some historic points of interest nearby.
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to explore some of the caves and coves around Tortuga Island. This island is home to La Grotte au Basin and La Grotte de la Galerie. Tortuga is still a relatively deserted island so you won’t find any “tourist traps”, museums, galleries, or other common tourist attractions you might find in other parts of the Caribbean. The natural attractions such as the caves, the beaches, the lagoons, and the scenic landscape are some of the major draws to the area. Keep in mind that you could take a sailboat or fishing boat to some of the nearby islands to make the most of your visit.
