While many claim Bora Bora to be the most beautiful island in the world, it is indisputably one of the most romantic. Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. French Polynesia is made up of 120 islands forming the five main archipelagos. The capital, Papeete is located on Tahiti, the largest island. Tahiti is located 4,100 kilometers (2,550 miles) from New Zealand, 6,100 kilometers (3,790 miles) from Sydney, 6,600 kilometers (4,100 miles, 8 hour flight) from Los Angeles and 15,700 kilometers (9,755 miles) from Paris. The island of Bora Bora is located about 240 kilometers (149 miles) northwest of Tahiti (approximately 45 minute flight). The island is surrounded by a lagoon which is protected by a barrier reef. In the center of the island, remnants of an extinct volcano rise to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.
