The tropics are home to a wide variety of industries, many of which have headquarters in the most beautiful beach towns on the planet. Despite the stunning destinations, business travelers fortunate enough to have a seat saved at the surfside conference table often miss out on actually enjoying those beautiful locales. Follow these five quick tips, and you’ll be stepping out of the meeting room and onto the sand, and trading that laptop for a boogie board before sundown.
Check the weather and plan to dress accordingly. If you want to be extra conservative with luggage space, limit the number of suits you bring to just one—but bring an extra shirt to wear with it. Keep your mind on post-meeting attire. Gents, bring light shirts and airy pants or shorts; and ladies, break out the sundresses and tank tops that have been hibernating in the back of your closet. Remember: if you wear them, the beach will come!
Prepare for Meetings Ahead of Time
You don’t want to work any longer than you have to, right? Prepare documents, notes, contracts, and anything else you need ahead of time. This will cut down on time spent indoors and leave you free to venture out into those warm, inviting aqua waters.
Bring a Loved One
Don’t feel bad about leaving your partner alone while you’re working; the beach is a grand companion, and your loved one will probably be feeling sorry for you! Best of all, you’ll have company to look forward to after you end the work part of your day.
Take Advantage of Free Time
Time is a valuable currency, and you don’t want to waste a single second of it. After work obligations have been met for the day, get out there and do what you want to do! Go snorkeling, rent a jet ski, or simply lay out on the beach, if that’s what you want to do.
If your trip lands on a holiday or weekend, think about booking an extra day or two. Immerse yourself in the laidback beach culture sans work obligations, and allow yourself to enjoy true vacation time.
