Solo Beach Trips Are Surging This Valentine’s Day—Up 100%, New Data Shows

Solo travel is surging as a popular way to spend Valentine’s Day, with trip searches for solos increasing over 100 percent, compared to last year, according to Airbnb data. It’s the perfect opportunity for those who want to enjoy their own personal adventure, and perhaps some self-love, rather than focusing on the traditional couple-focused getaways.

Airbnb’s stats show solo travelers are primarily seeking sunshine and beach locales, but there are other factors involved in choosing a destination too. That includes walkability, low stress, and available experiences, such as small-group excursions, tastings, and tours that offer social contact without requiring a partner.

Why Go Solo

As an increasing number of travelers are discovering, there are many benefits of a solo trip, such as the freedom to do what you want when you want, and to rest without feeling guilty when you need to. Planning is easier as there’s no need to accommodate someone else’s priorities. If you start craving company, in many places you’ll find it’s actually easier to meet new people, both locals and other solo travelers alike.

Solo-Friendly Destinations

As a very frequent solo traveler living in a popular beach vacation destination, I sometimes seek the opposite, but I also like to enjoy warmer waters in the winter. With the chillier temperatures of the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez near my home in the winter, I might head to Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, one of the Caribbean Islands, or even a destination in the Southern Hemisphere if it’s a longer trip.

A few of my favorite beach destinations for solo travel around Valentine’s Day include:

  • Tulum, Mexico: Mayan ruins overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, white sandy beaches, freshwater cenotes, and plenty of opportunities for meeting other solos at boutique hostels, in yoga classes, and nightlife venues.
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico: An ideal mix of beaches, history, culture, and vibrant nightlife, with many great day tours, like a small-group hiking excursion in El Yunque National Forest, a tropical rainforest with waterfalls and natural water slides.
  • Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands: One of the safest Caribbean Islands for solos, perfect for those who want to relax on beautiful chalk-white sandy beaches, snorkel, or dive. Stingray City and snorkeling boat tours are highly social, and there are also small-group e-bike tours for exploring the island while getting to know other travelers.
  • Bali, Indonesia: The ideal mix of beaches,  jungle landscapes, self-reflection and socializing. You might split your time between Canggu, with its picturesque sandy stretches, and Ubud for culture and yoga.

Solo Travel Tips

  • Research the safety of your destination and the areas of your accommodation options before booking.
  • Have at least one plan for each day of your trip so that you don’t end up staying inside your hotel or vacation rental searching the Internet all day.
  • Book a guided tour or two to provide some good opportunities for socializing without pressure.
  • Avoid obviously uber-romantic spots such as candlelit restaurants where you’re guaranteed to be surrounded by couples.
  • Prioritize self-care, such as booking a spa treatment or moving your body in ways that feel good, like yoga or walking.

Solo trips provide a great opportunity to boost confidence, enhance well-being, and even change your perspective on life. What better gift to give yourself for Valentine’s Day?
