This Florida Beach City Just Earned a Spot Among America’s Best Small Cities

In the most recent Condé Nast Traveler annual Readers’ Choice Awards, over 757,000 voted to select the best small cities in the U.S. and St. Augustine was one of the highest ranking. With the perfect mix of beautiful beaches and rich history, it’s not surprising that it’s such a beloved destination. If you’ve never been, it might be time to start planning.

This northern Florida city boasts nearly 500 years of history having been founded by Spanish settlers in 1565, making it the oldest continously inhabited colonial settlement in the continental U.S. Many of its original buildings have managed to stand the test of time, while the cobbled streets have an Old World feel that might make you think you’ve somehow landed in Europe. Nearby, there are more than 40 miles of gorgeous white sands lapped by clear blue waters.

Most Spectacular Beaches

Among St. Augustine’s many impressive beaches is tranquil Crescent Beach, one of the most unspoiled stretches of coastline, boasting often empty white sands. Vilano Beach is a top spot for waterports like kayaking, paddleboarding, and parasailing. The most central and most popular beach shares its name with the city. St. Augustine Beach offers soft white sands, a pier, and splash park.

Historic Sites & Other Top Attractions

The famous Castillo de San Marcos is the crown jewel when it comes to historic cites. At this fort built by the Spanish in 1672, visitors can witness the cannon and musket firing demonstrations, see the Old Jail where criminals were held, and walk the walls holding the memories of centuries-old battles. Dating to 1740, Fort Matanzas on the Intracoastal Waterway is surrounded by a nearly 300-acre park with walking trails, small tidal beaches, and picnic areas. Just a few of the other historic sites include the Old Jail, Oldest House, and the Fountain of Youth.

Wildlife enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the St. Augustine Wild Reserve, home to rescued and exotic animals, including lions, tigers, bears, wolves, leopards, and jaguars. The Old Town Trolley tour is a great way to sightsee and a visit to the Pirate & Treasure Museum brings the chance to swing a sword. Be sure to climb to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse for a panoramic view and check out the exhibits on the lighthouse keepers and shipwrecks.

When to Go

St. Augustine does get hit by tropical storms and hurricanes with the season offically running from June through November, although the biggest risk is between mid-August and October.

The best time to visit St. Augustine for fewer crowds and mild weather is from about mid-March through May or the month of November.
