The Beach

As one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean, it’s no surprise that Trunk Bay looks as if it were created for postcards. It often appears on Instagram feeds, with the brilliant blue of the bay popping against the crescent of bright white, powdery sand. But being there in person is nothing like looking at a photo. It’s as if you’ve stepped into a computer-generated image that was too good to be real. The impossibly soft sand feels amazing between your toes and beneath your feet.

Looking out at the water, you’ll notice that it shifts through shades of nearly transparent turquoise and pale aqua in the shallows to deep sapphire further out toward the reef. The bay is gin-clear, while an underwater snorkeling trail awaits. As you step in, it’s as if you’re in your own serene world among tropical fish that dart about the coral. Back on shore, sink into your beach towel (or a chair), unwinding while the warmth of the sun’s rays touch your skin and palms lazily sway overhead.

Why It Made Our World’s Best Beaches List

Sheer beauty. As soon as you lay eyes on Trunk Bay, you’ll understand why experts gave it a 5 out of 5 rating, while it has a 4.9 out of 5 on Google Reviews. The sand is almost blindingly white, made up of calcium carbonate from broken-down coral reefs and mollusk shells. It’s lapped by water in a brilliant array of blues while backed by lush sea grape and coconut palm trees.

Exceptional water clarity and quality.  The quality of the water was ranked 5 out of 5 by experts, while the water clarity is exceptional, making Trunk Bay one of the world’s most popular spots for snorkeling.

Finding serenity. As one of the world’s most beautiful (and popular) beaches, Trunk Bay can get busy, but it’s still possible to find serenity. If you turn left after entering and walk west toward the rocks, you can escape the crowds, as most beachgoers don’t want to walk far with their supplies. Plus, just beyond the rocks, you’ll discover a little hidden beach on the other side.

How to Get There

Cyril E. King Airport

Nearest airport: Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas is the closest airport to Trunk Bay. From there, you’ll need to take a taxi to the ferry terminal in Charlotte Amalie, roughly five miles away. Hop on a ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John Island, followed by a short taxi ride to Trunk Bay.

Boat tours: Multiple boat tours operate from St. Thomas to Trunk Bay, including half-day trips, private boat charters, and snorkeling excursions departing from Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook.

Primary access route: Most visitors arrive at Trunk Bay by taking an open-air safari bus/taxi from the ferry terminal in Cruz Bay, St. John, a 10-minute ride for about $12 per person (slightly less for two or more people). Those coming from St. Thomas take a ferry to Cruz Bay before switching to a local taxi. It is also possible to rent a car and drive; however, the parking lot fills quickly.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended: Late April through early June or November offer a good balance of pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and potentially lower prices.

High season (mid-December–mid-April): High season offers the best weather with temperatures in the 80s°F/28°C, with minimal rain. It’s a perfect time to swim or snorkel with the sea temperature averaging between 78°F and 81°F/25.5°C and 27°C. However, this is when Trunk Bay will be at its busiest, particularly between March and mid-April, which sees big spring break crowds. Expect to pay higher accommodation rates due to demand. If you plan to visit during this period, you’ll enjoy a better experience by arriving right when facilities open at 8 a.m. or after 3 p.m., as the crowds begin to thin.

Shoulder season (Late April–June/November): These periods are shoulder seasons for the best balance of fewer crowds, warm weather, warm water for swimming (around 80°F to 82°F/26.7°C to 28°C), and the potential for discounts on accommodation, as compared to the high season.

Low season: (July–October): The low season is the hottest and most humid time of year at Trunk Bay. The storm season is officially June through November; however, the months at highest risk of tropical storms and hurricanes are September and October. The upside is that this is the most tranquil time to visit, with few if any crowds. There are often substantial discounts on airfare and accommodation as well.
