Inside Buoy Haus Beach Resort: A Luxury St. Thomas Escape

The saying goes that some of the best things are right in your own backyard, a sentiment that perfectly describes the U.S. Virgin Islands. Comprised of three main islands, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, plus roughly 50 minor islands and cays, the USVI offers American citizens a passport-free tropical escape. While St. Thomas is famous for being the busiest of the main islands, I recently enjoyed a quiet stay at the tucked-away Buoy Haus Beach Resort, St. Thomas.

Buoy Haus Beach Resort St. Thomas forms one half of Frenchman’s Reef, a resort complex that pairs two distinct luxury hotels on a single beachfront property: the intimate Buoy Haus Beach Resort and the larger Westin St. Thomas Beach Resort & Spa. Nestled on Morningstar Beach, the 94-room boutique hideaway offers the best of both worlds: a secluded, upscale retreat with access to the larger resort amenities next door. The stylish king-bed guestrooms and one-bedroom suites are tailored for couples, solo travelers, and groups of friends, and each spacious suite has a private balcony overlooking the beach or the resort gardens.  

On-site dining ranges from a rooftop fine-dining restaurant to a beachside, picnic-table style bar and grill. The hotel has a small fitness center and access to the Heavenly Spa at The Westin St. Thomas Beach Resort & Spa, which is served by the resort shuttle. Outside, guests have direct access to the warm waters of Morningstar Beach and an infinity pool with cabanas and loungers.

The resort also acts as a hub for adventure, with concierge-arranged snorkeling trips, island tours, and night kayaking excursions. Some of the complimentary water activities include kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. 

Accommodations at Buoy Haus St. Thomas include large king bed guest rooms and one-bedroom suites. All of the guestrooms are designed with a modern Caribbean flair, with cool, sand-toned tile floors, soft, coral-hued walls, and rich wood accents. The walls are decorated with minimalist, framed nature, and to round out the contemporary vibe, trendy midcentury-modern globe pendants hang beside the nightstand. 

For my stay, I was checked into a ground-floor Beachfront King guest room, a category that offers the ultimate luxury: having the beach just steps from your room. Inside, the space was outfitted with a generous closet, ample storage drawers, and a dedicated workspace. The sleek bathroom featured a massive walk-in shower and double vanities. For lounging, the room came equipped with a loveseat, a dining table that doubled as a cozy breakfast nook, and a fully stocked minibar. The true highlight, however, was the furnished patio, framed by café shutters that opened to reveal ocean views.

The one-bedroom suites come with added square footage and two private balconies.  Each has a separate bedroom and living room, featuring an L-shaped sofa, a coffee table, an armchair, and an ottoman. Keep in mind that while the resort offers connecting rooms, cribs or rollaway beds are not available. Many of the rooms are mobility-accessible, with tubs and roll-in showers, and hearing-accessible, with visual alarms and notification devices for doors and phones. 

For a resort of its size, Buoy Haus has a considerable number of dining options. The hotel is anchored by the rooftop restaurant Isla Blue, an international fusion restaurant with Japanese, Caribbean, and Mexican flavors. Make a reservation to enjoy smoked gyozas or whole fried snapper in the second-story restaurant with the sound of the surf crashing below. In the downstairs lobby, Sandbar specializes in Spanish dishes like classic paella and ceviche. 

For casual eats, there are three options. First, Sugarfin is an all-day Caribbean-Asian outlet that serves classic breakfast items like pancakes and omelets, then transitions to lunch and dinner, where fish tacos, sushi, and conch fritters headline the menu. Salt Shack is a toes-in-the-sand restaurant with Caribbean bites like Caribbean lobster and BBQ ribs served on picnic tables under stringed lights. And for potent cocktails, there’s Tide Pools Cabana and Bar. Room service is available from the Sugarfin menu and operates from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

For spa services, guests can take the five-minute hotel shuttle to the Westin Beach Resort & Spa and book treatments at the Heavenly Spa, a full-service spa with a sauna, steam room, and 13 treatment rooms. I enjoyed a 50-minute relaxation massage, then lounged at the adults-only Serenity pool before heading back to Buoy Haus. Other spa services include body scrubs, facials, and hair and nail services. 

Back at Buoy Haus, there’s a tidy fitness center with newer equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes. If you’re strength training, there’s a handful of machines and a full set of dumbbells and kettlebells. As for fitness classes, head to the Westin for yoga, Pilates, and outdoor conditioning sessions. 

The resort’s main infinity-edge pool is the showpiece, which is bordered by cabanas and loungers. Direct access to Morningstar Bay is one of the resort’s clearest selling points. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are set up and serviced daily, and a small kiosk at the edge of the property handles snorkel equipment and paddleboard rentals. Though the sand here is soft, the beach entry is pebbly, so consider bringing water shoes. 

Because of the accommodations (each guestroom and suite has a king-size bed, and there are no rollaway beds or cribs), the resort may be better suited for families with tweens and teens. If you do travel with little ones, the Westin St. Thomas offers a Kids Club for kids ages 4 through 12. For a fee, there are half-day, full-day, and evening participation sessions with activities such as bracelet making, scavenger hunts, and cookie decorating. 

The concierge desk can arrange water-based activities, such as guided jet ski tours, glow-in-the-dark kayak sessions, or sunset catamaran cruises, which depart directly from the Westin’s dock. You can also maximize your stay in St. Thomas by island hopping to Buck Island for the excellent snorkeling, or booking a ferry to St. John for a private tour. The hotel can also arrange taxis to visit some of St. Thomas’ best attractions, such as the famous Magen’s Bay, Drake’s Seat lookout, and the historic town of Charlotte Amalie.  

Buoy Haus Beach resort offers an upscale stay on St. Thomas. The quiet resort is a great option for couples looking to get away or solo travelers looking to recharge in a beach setting. Look forward to waking up to gorgeous beach views, relaxing in the infinity edge pool, or ending your day with a cocktail on the rooftop. 

August through November is low season on the island, which can yield better rates and fewer crowds. Visit in March for St. Thomas International Regatta and in April to enjoy St. Thomas’ Carnival.
