As Airbnb highlights, traveling to a coastal destination is “increasingly out of reach for many families.” An astounding 79 percent of Americans revealed that they’re worried about rising travel costs,” according to a recent Allianz Partners survey. With Airbnb rates rising nearly 20 percent this summer, it’s no wonder many aren’t sure they can afford a beach trip this year.
To help more families enjoy beach access, the vacation rental company published a list of the most budget-friendly destinations, and it included three beach towns in Florida. You’ll get the most for your money and proximity to the state’s turquoise waters by booking a rental in these beach towns.
Cocoa Beach
Located on a barrier island along the east-central Space Coast, just south of Cape Canaveral and about 50 miles east of Orlando, Cocoa Beach is famous for its waves that served as the training ground for 11-time World Surf League champion Kelly Slater. It’s a top spot for anyone who wants to get up on the board (gear rentals and lessons available), although simply relaxing under the sun is always popular.
Visitors will also find waterfront bars for sipping a refreshing cocktail while taking in the scene. Plus, the sandy shoreline is an excellent vantage point for viewing rocket launches from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island
Just 35 miles north of Jacksonville, the historic town of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island offers Old Florida while easily accessible from the mainland by two bridges. Ride a horse-drawn carriage to see the sights downtown, including Victorian-, Gothic-, Italianate-, and Queen Anne-style buildings.
Before or after your jaunt, take advantage of the 13 miles of soft, sandy beach. Main Beach Park is just two miles east and includes a boardwalk, skate park, mini-golf, a playground, and eateries boasting spectacular views of the Atlantic. Be sure to keep an eye out for sea turtles, as this is a prime location for green, loggerhead, and leatherback sea turtles between May and October.
Fort Pierce
Known as the “Sunrise City” for its unobstructed views of the morning sky, Fort Pierce lies along Florida’s Treasure Coast. Fort Pierce City Marina is a popular attraction here with colorful murals and dockside seafood restaurants. Of course, the crown jewel is arguably the 20 miles of unspoiled white sands where crowds are rarely encountered.
The best and closest beaches to downtown are just across the bridge on Hutchinson Island. South Beach Park provides access to a boardwalk and picnic pavilions, while Fort Pierce Inlet State Park is known for its vibrant reefs and opportunities for memorable swims. If you’re hoping to catch your dinner, head to Jetty Park.
