Spotlighting places with small populations that have “big hearts and outsized attractions,” Travel + Leisure recently released its list of America’s Best Small Towns. The ranking includes the very best small beach town—and, as the headline shows, the honor went to Pismo Beach, California.
Located along the Central Coast, this coastal resort town lies roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, a popular destination for residents of Northern and Southern California. But for anyone seeking a getaway with a wide range of things to do, opportunities to relax, and enjoy spectacular seaside scenery, Pismo Beach is worth planning a trip around.
17 Miles of Soft, Sandy Shores
The town is fronted by a 17-mile stretch of uninterrupted soft, wide sands known as Pismo State Beach, which also spans the neighboring coastal communities of Grover Beach and Oceano. One of the longest in the state, it’s split up into several distinct sections, each offering a different experience.
Further from town are quieter spots, while the main center is a hive of activity. Driving ATVs on designated sections draws many, but it’s also popular for sunbathing, swimming, surf fishing, and walks along the scenic dunes and freshwater lagoon. Birders should head to the wetlands, inhabited by diverse species, including wading herons, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. From November through February, up to 230,000 wintering monarch butterflies blanket the eucalyptus trees with black and orange.
Just under two miles north of the town center is Dinosaur Caves Park. Tidepooling is a treat here at the base of the cliffs during a low tide. Look for all sorts of marine creatures, like hermit crabs, colorful starfish, and sea anemones.
Beyond the Sand
The Pismo Beach Walkway & Boardwalk, running adjacent to the iconic Pismo Beach Pier, has a whale-themed playground and offers stunning ocean views. Keep an eye out for migrating whales year-round. This is also a great spot for fishing and an ideal vantage point for sunset-watching.
Lining the main drag in town are surf shacks, taffy shops, ice cream parlors, and independent shops offering everything from beach gear and clothing to local art and souvenirs. Rentals are available for bodyboards, surfboards, and electric bikes, ideal for cruising the coastline.

The two beachfront campgrounds, North Beach and Oceano, are ideal for communing with nature. Step out of your tent, RV, or trailer to sip your morning coffee with panoramic views of the dunes and the waves. If you prefer the comforts of home, you’ll find an array of oceanfront hotels and vacation rentals.
