When Tripadvisor recently released its 2026 Mid-Year Experiences Trends Report, it showed travelers have been seeking experiences for connecting “more deeply with the places they visit.”
The travel platform highlighted coastal destinations that dominated its list of fastest-growing places for those experiences during the first half of 2026 – and, at No. 1 by far, was Catalina Island with an astounding 383% increase in bookings. That’s 316% more than second-place La Jolla, San Diego‘s popular seaside neighborhood.
The data makes it obvious that travelers can’t get enough of this island. Not only is it easily reached, just an hour’s ferry ride from the mainland, it’s also stunningly scenic and offers a long list of activity options, including unique experiences.
Some of the Best Snorkeling in the Continental U.S.
The clear blue waters that surround Catalina are home to giant kelp forests and abundant marine life. In fact, Lover’s Cove often ranks among the world’s top 10 snorkeling destinations. Just a 10-to-15-minute walk southeast from the main town and Avalon’s ferry dock along Pebbly Beach Road, it boasts one of the West Coast’s heaviest concentrations of fish.
Watch for the many bright orange Garibaldi, the state marine fish, opaleye with their striking blue eyes, giant sea bass, and California Sheephead, known for their red bodies and dark heads. Moray eels, bat rays, and docile leopard sharks can be spotted too.
Over 60 Miles of Scenic Beaches
With more than 60 miles of sandy shores, visitors also have plenty of beaches to choose from, ranging from remote, tranquil stretches to lively resort strands. South Beach and Middle Beach are right in the main town of Avalon near the pier. They’re ideal for sunbathing, building sandcastles, wading, and swimming. For a quieter stretch, head to Step Beach just before the Via Casino archway to relax away from the crowds. Just past Catalina Casino is Descanso Beach, with a beachside bar and eatery, cabana and lounge chair rentals.
For the more adventurous, Parsons Landing at the far western end of the island is only accessible by boat, kayak, or a strenuous hike (about 7 miles from Two Harbors). This is one of the island’s most peaceful beaches, complete with dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear water, and unforgettable sunsets.
More Unique Experiences
Beyond hiking, snorkeling, and other water sports like sailing and kayaking, the island is famous for golf as the home of the oldest operating course west of the Mississippi River. The narrow Catalina Island Golf Course winds through Avalon Canyon, showcasing views of the bay and the Catalina Casino. Visitors can also take a tour to see bison, descendants of a film set herd, left behind in the 1920s.
