W Algarve Review: A Calm, Cave-Inspired Retreat Above Albufeira’s Party Scene

If you know anything about Albufeira, you know its reputation as the Algarve’s party town for British and American tourists. But my stay at the W Algarve felt a world away from that. The property sprawls enough that you never have to leave: you can drift from the lounge to the pool to the beach without ever stepping foot off the property. The grounds and gardens are immaculate, the sunsets are some of the best on this coast, and the hotel sits far enough from the noise to feel like a retreat.

It’s only about a 10-minute drive from the Strip and Old Town, and roughly 40 minutes from Faro airport, so the nightlife is there if you are feeling like going out and easy to overlook if you don’t. It’s also Portugal’s first W hotel, though it behaves less like a hotel and more like a self-contained resort.

About the W Algarve

The W brand is known for pulling the local landscape into its design through thoughtful touches, and this hotel is no exception. The building looks a bit like a whale from the outside, and inside, the curves and textures echo the sea caves carved into the Algarve cliffs. The palette is the light of the region itself, blues and whites everywhere. Wood, stone, and water set the tone, and the details come from Portuguese craft: azulejo tiles, fishing buoys, and bobbin lace.

All rooms face west, so sunset views come standard, and the small touches, like sardine-shaped pillows, keep it playful. It is one of the Algarve’s leading luxury hotels, with 134 guest rooms and 83 residences.

Location-wise, the hotel sits in Albufeira’s Sesmarias area, outside the town center. It’s only about 0.7 miles from Balbina Beach, roughly 2 miles from Albufeira Marina, and about 4 miles from Old Town Square. That means a car or taxi for town, which suits the stay.

Rooms, Suites & Villas

Accommodations range from standard rooms to suites, some with rooftop pools, and private residences with their own pools. All face the ocean, and each opens onto a private balcony with sea views.

My room was supremely comfortable. The bed was excellent, the blackout curtains worked a little too well, and there was a proper lounge area with a couch. The closet felt designed with luxury in mind, and the bathroom was generously sized. The large patio was ideal for remote work or a morning yoga session. Service felt constant, with daytime housekeeping and an evening turndown that came with chocolates. A fully stocked complimentary minibar, coffee and tea, and a robe and slippers rounded things out.

Dining & Restaurants

The hotel has six restaurants and bars, which is enough to avoid repeating yourself over a long weekend.

  • Market Kitchen: The all-day Portuguese restaurant. It reimagines southern Portuguese cooking with modern twists, from an Algarvian seafood cataplana to chef-selected sushi. (You must order the cataplana—a traditional Algarve dish named for the clamshell-shaped copper pot it’s cooked in).
  • Paper Moon: The rooftop Italian restaurant, with panoramic views over the grounds and the Atlantic. It is the Mediterranean sister to the original Milan restaurant, which opened in 1977. Come for cocktails and wine too.
  • Vino: An intimate evening with 5- and 7-course tasting menus. The wine list is curated by the hotel’s Master Sommelier.
  • W Lounge: A beautifully aesthetic bar for drinks and tapas.
  • Wet Deck: Casual options by the pool, served through the SIP @ WET bar.
  • Air: Cocktails and healthy Mediterranean light bites. It’s billed as a sparkling-wine sunset deck, so time your visit for the end of the day.

I would be remiss not to mention how accommodating the hotel was for a guest with celiac disease. The staff took my dietary needs very seriously, I felt safe throughout my stay, and there were plenty of delicious options to choose from. If you’re gluten-free or have food allergies, this hotel will take excellent care of you.

Spa & Wellness

Wellness is built into the stay in small ways. A yoga mat was waiting in my room, with a QR code linking to one of the hotel’s personal trainers leading a video class.

The AWAY Spa has six treatment rooms, including one for couples, plus a hair salon and a mani-pedi bar. The wet area includes a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool, and a covered outdoor relaxation lounge overlooks the gardens.

FIT is the hotel’s gym, with 134 square meters indoors and more than 320 square meters outdoors. It has TechnoGym equipment and an Olympic power rack, and it hosts high-intensity workouts and bootcamps. Sunrise yoga and a dip at the Wet Deck round out the day. Newer padel, tennis, pickleball, and multi-use courts are on site as well, and Boavista Golf Resort is nearby for golfers.

Pools & Beach Access

The pool complex is quite large and designed for lingering. The Wet Deck has cabanas around a double-level infinity pool, and residences have their own private pool.

A short walk leads to Evaristo and Balbina beaches, with direct access from the hotel. The beach really feels private because the only other way to reach it is by water, so the sand never gets the crowds Albufeira’s central beaches do.

Family-Friendly Amenities & Kids’ Club

This isn’t a place built around kids per se, but it is very kid-friendly. Families will find pools, beach access, and a playground, and the grounds are big enough for children to roam. It works best for families who want a calm resort stay rather than a full kids’ program.

Things to Do

The concierge can arrange gastronomic tours, hiking, off-road driving, horseback riding, golf, and private sightseeing tours, so you can plan a day away without doing the legwork. The sightseeing tours let you explore Albufeira’s Old Town at your own pace, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings, plus landmarks like the Igreja Matriz and the coastline.

Our favorite outing was a boat tour of the Benagil caves. Afterward, the crew took us to a beach where lunch was waiting on the sand, with champagne, fruit, and sandwiches, plus chairs and umbrellas. It was really special.

If you’d rather go on foot, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is the area’s signature walk. It runs about 3.7 miles one way between Marinha Beach and Vale de Centeanes Beach, with continuous views of the golden cliffs (but many people walk only a section). The trail passes Benagil Beach but does not take you into the caves, which is why a boat trip is worth pairing with it.

Why We Love It

The staff, without a doubt. The team runs on an “all-in” philosophy, and it shows, from a midnight snack hankering to local insider tips to the occasional unexpected extra. Pets are welcome too, through the hotel’s P.A.W. program, which includes cozy beds, treats, and walks. In summer, look out for AURA, the June to August programming that turns sunset parties into music-led events with clifftop views.

Insider Tips

Visit in the shoulder season. September and October are ideal, with warm weather, better rates, and thinner crowds. The same goes for the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: spring and autumn are the best seasons, and summer hikers should start early because there is little shade. Plan at least one day beyond the property for the Benagil caves and the coast, and let the hotel handle the logistics.
