When it comes to admiring cherry blossoms, many think of Japan, a country that’s practically synonymous with the blooms that range in shades from white to light and dark pink. But if you’re looking for that ultimate escape with pristine, white sandy beaches lapped by turquoise water and the opportunity to be immersed in the beauty of the ornamental trees, you might consider visiting Jeju Island instead.
This stunning volcanic island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located off South Korea’s southern coast, providing an incredible feast for the eyes in spring. The pastel hues of the cherry blossoms and the canola fields that create a golden blanket across the island’s landscapes are a vision to behold. Combined with the lush greenery, the dazzling chalk-white beaches, and brilliant aquamarine sea, it’s like an artist’s palette.
When and Where to See the Blooms
Cherry blossoms typically start blooming around the first official day of spring, peaking toward the end of March and continuing into early April. As color begins to cover the island, the Cherry Blossom Festival provides a magical experience with the parks adorned in pink blossoms. There will be food stalls, art exhibitions, and cultural performances too.
The most iconic cherry blossom sites include Jeonnong-ro Street in Jeju City, which serves as the heart of the festival. Cars are restricted, which means you can enjoy a three-quarter-mile walk beneath a tunnel of the blossoms, illuminated at night. Noksan-ro Road is famous for its over six-mile stretch where you’ll see pink cherry blossoms alongside golden canola flowers for a dramatic contrast.
The Beaches
In between viewing the cherry blossoms and other sights, head to one of the spectacular beaches like Hyeopjae with its striking white sands and brilliant, shallow blue-green waters, ideal for swimming. There are beachfront cafes and restaurants that make it enjoyable to spend an entire day here.
For more hidden, secluded otopins, consider Gwakji, a local favorite for relaxation with natural hot springs nearby. On the eastern coast of Jeju, Handam provides a tranquil (and highly Instagrammable) spot with magnificent rock formations and gentle waves.
How to Get to Jeju Island
The quickest and most convenient way to get to Jeju is to take one of the frequent flights from Seoul, Busan, Wonju, or Cheongju. If you plan on visiting Singapore, direct international flights are available to Jeju.
There are also ferries available from the major ports, including Wando, which takes just three hours as one of the fastest ferry options. Goheung is the next best at 3.5 hours and you can also depart on the overnight ferry from Busan, which takes 11 to 12 hours.
