About

Carla Vianna is a Brazilian-American travel writer and photographer who’s passionate about blending storytelling with immersive travel experiences. A former newspaper journalist, her journey into travel blogging began in 2017, when she quit her job and sold most of her belongings for a yearlong backpacking trip that took her to over 20 countries across three continents. Yet her relationship with borders and airplanes began much earlier. As a child of Brazilian immigrants, she took her first flight at just two months old—a 10-hour journey to her parents’ hometown in southern Brazil to meet her grandparents.

Split between two cultures, Carla’s upbringing shaped her into the open-minded, curious traveler she is today. Rather than following mainstream travel trends, Carla seeks out destinations that spark introspection and adventure—places that challenge the way we see the world and our place in it.

Today, she shares her journeys through visual storytelling on Instagram (@bycarlavianna), comprehensive travel guides on her blog (TravelByCarlaVianna.com), and in publications like The Washington Post, Tripadvisor, and Condé Nast Traveler. With a deep love for both travel and personal growth, Carla hopes to inspire others to explore the world, responsibly and curiously.

Favorite Destinations

  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Call me biased—but Rio is one of the most geographically stunning cities I have ever seen. I love waking up between the mountains and the sea.
  • Bali, Indonesia – I left my heart in Bali when I first visited in 2018, and I’ve made it a point to return every two years. I keep going back for the beaches, the warm Balinese smiles, and the beautiful spiritual connection the local people cultivate with the island.
  • Caraíva, Bahia, Brazil – No roads, no cell service, and no shoes required. I love this tiny fishing village for its remoteness, surprisingly solid culinary scene, and laid-back vibes.

Fun Facts

  • 🧘 Certified yoga teacher as of 2024—excited to start incorporating yoga into my travels.
  • 🌴 Guided a group trip to Bali in 2023, where I was able to share my love for the island with four other travelers.
  • 🚌 Spent four months traveling overland in South America, including a 23-hour bus trip in Chile.
