There’s no doubt that Elafonissi (also spelled Elafonisi) is a visual stunner. You’ve seen the photos of this pristine Greek beach, and you’ve probably noticed that it’s frequently named among or at the top of lists of the world’s most beautiful beaches. But what’s it like to actually be there? If you time your visit right (as we’ve outlined below), you can enjoy a more peaceful experience without the peak summer crowds.

Just imagine strolling across the pink-tinted sands before dipping your feet into the shallow, clear water in shades of jade and turquoise, surrounded by nature with few others around. The only sounds are of the rippling waters and the birds. It’s easier to notice the scent of saltwater and wild herbs growing in the dunes, carried in the gentle breeze. Time slows as you wade through the lagoon, with the water barely grazing your knees, footprints fading as you move forward toward the islet with its low dunes and secluded coves. If the main beach starts to get busy, no worries. You’ll be immersed in tranquil beauty in the more secluded, protected reserve.

Why It Made Our World’s Best Beaches List

Soft white sands with stretches that have pink hues

Elafonissi is especially renowned for its beautiful sands with a pink tint in areas near the shoreline derived from crushed coral. It makes for a stunning photo op, especially with the contrasting aquamarine water. Not surprisingly, it earned a 4.5 out of 5 for its beauty, while it has an impressive 4.6 on Google Reviews.

The color and clarity of the water

The intense blue hue and striking water clarity made it the tenth best of all beaches included in the study. Plus, as the water is calm and shallow, you can wade across to Elafonissi islet to avoid the crowds and enjoy unwinding in the little sandy coves.

The flora

Elafonissi is a Natura 200 protected area, in part due to its over 100 rare and endemic plant species. While wildflowers bloom across Crete in late spring, here in late summer and early fall, the dunes will be adorned with rare sea daffodils known as the “lilies of Knossos.”

Nearest airport: Chania International Airport (CHQ), approximately 50 miles away (1.5- to 2-hour drive along scenic, narrow mountain roads. Heraklion Airport (HER) is an alternative; however, the 130-mile route requires a 3.5 to 4-hour drive.

Independent drive from Chania: Most visitors rent a car and drive from Chania town. While it is possible to take the bus from Chania, service is infrequent.

Boat tours: There are several group boat tours to Elafonissi, primarily departing from Paleochora in the southwest part of the island, an approximately 30-minute journey. Full-day (often private) sailing trips are also available from Chania. While those excursions can be customized, they’re typically 8- to 10-hour trips, with several hours at the beach.

Entry requirements: There are no capacity limits, and no fees, permits, or reservations are required to visit Elafonissi Beach.

Recommended: May through early June or mid-September through early October

Elafonissi is very busy from about mid-June through early September. For ideal conditions and fewer crowds, visit between May and early June or mid-September through early October. Keep in mind that the water will be warmer in early fall (around 77°F/°25C compared to 70°F/21°C), having warmed up all summer.

High season (mid-June–early September): High season coincides with summer, typically bringing big crowds, higher accommodation rates, and hot temperatures that can exceed 90°F/32.2°C. It’s the perfect time to swim with frequent blue skies and sea temperatures typically ranging between 72°F and 81°F/22°C and 27°C. If you visit Crete during this time of year and prefer a more peaceful experience, arrive on a weekday before 8 am or after 6 pm.

Shoulder season (April– early June/mid-September– mid-October): The shoulder season offers a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Visit in early fall to enjoy warmer water for swimming as noted.

Low season: (mid-October–March): While crowd levels are minimal during the low season, rain is more likely, and it’s not the best time for swimming. With mild temperatures (ranging from 55°F to 63°F in the winter, it’s better for exploring the dunes and enjoying the beauty in a much more tranquil atmosphere. Winter is the wet season, with December and January bringing the most rain (over 4″ across 13 days on average). The sea temperature is around 60°F, too chilly for more than a quick dip. Crete is not subject to monsoons or hurricanes.

Relax on the sand while taking in the spectacular beauty: During the high season, there are umbrellas and loungers available near the entrance to Elafonissi on the main, northern side of the beach. As they fill up quickly, you might want to bring your own umbrella and towels, which are allowed and highly recommended in July and August.

Swimming, snorkeling, and other watersports: With calm, shallow waters and outstanding clarity, Elafonissi is ideal for swimming. You can easily walk through the lagoons on the soft sandy bottom, while lifeguards will be staffed here in the summer to ensure safety. That said, beyond the seasonal crowds, it can get windy. On windy days, you can find better spots for swimming by walking toward the islet. While there are some rocky areas nearby, your feet will mostly be touching soft sand. If you bring your own snorkeling gear, the best spot for the activity is around those rocky, protected areas close to the islet, where you’ll often find starfish and colorful fish. SUP and kayak rentals are also available for paddling.

Wade to the islet of Elafonissi: Speaking of the walk to the islet, it’s an experience that shouldn’t be missed, even if you plan to spend most of the day at the main beach. In addition to good opportunities for snorkeling, there are many small, sandy coves, a lighthouse, a chapel dedicated to the victims of an 1824 massacre, and a little chapel. You can also explore the protected dunes with rare sea cedars and unique white sand lilies.

Hike: Explore the coastal dunes, shallow lagoons, and pink sand areas by hiking the easy, family-friendly three-mile-long Pink Sand Beach Loop. For a moderate six-mile hike that connects Elafonissi with nearby Kedrosdasos, take the Kedrodaso Beach-Elafonissi Loop. If you’re looking for something more challenging, you can hit the E4 Trail from Krios Beach, following the coast to Elafonissi, covering 11.5 miles.
