This Alabama Beach Town Just Beat Out Florida on the 2026 Best Beaches List

When you think about the most beautiful white sandy beaches in the country, Florida’s sugary sands probably come to mind, but there’s another slice of paradise for beachgoers right next door. In fact, Gulf Shores was just recognized on the U.S. News list of the best beaches in the country for 2026

Named among iconic stretches like Siesta Key and Sanibel Island in Florida, along with some of Hawaii’s top shores, it sits along Alabama’s Gulf Coast with its roughly 32 miles of continuous white quartz sand. Sparkling under the sun while lapped by brilliant emerald waters, it’s a stunner.

There are multiple places for enjoying the beauty of this shoreline. Before you start planning that next beach trip, you’ll want to get to know some of the best.

Gulf Shores Main Public Beach

As U.S. News notes, Gulf Shores Main Public Beach is where you’ll find the most amenities. It’s the main, central beach, a hub for beachgoers with amenities like picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, restrooms, and rinse-off showers. Plus, it offers convenient access to shops and restaurants. While it draws the crowds, the wide expanse of sandy shores makes it easy to find your own space.

If you’re looking for a lively spot where you can hang out at a beach bar in between activities, this is it. There are also protected swimming areas that have lifeguards on staff from March through October.

Gulf State Park

For a more nature-focused alternative with a secluded feel, Gulf State Park provides even more space. You won’t have to go without the essentials either, as the Beach Pavilion includes a snack bar, restrooms, and showers. While there are about 3.5 miles of unspoiled white sands for relaxation and more, visitors can enjoy all sorts of activities on and in the water. You’ll have your choice of saltwater along the Gulf Coast or Lake Shelby, a 900-acre freshwater lake.

Beach chair and umbrella rentals are available through Ike’s Beach Service, along with watersports gear like kayaks and paddleboards. If you want to try your luck at saltwater fishing, the Gulf State Park Pier is a popular spot. Wildlife lovers will enjoy it here too, with sightings of alligators, tortoises, bald eagles, and ospreys, while the Gulf State Park Nature Center serves as a living museum for native species.

Little Lagoon Pass Park

About three miles west of Highway 59 near the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Little Lagoon Pass Park is located directly on Little Lagoon Pass. It’s often referred to as a hidden gem, perfect for a beach day. Family-friendly, it offers calm, shallow waters connecting the lagoon to the Gulf, ideal for safe wading or swimming. There’s also a pier for fishing and access to the Little Lagoon Trail for kayaking and paddleboarding while watching for all sorts of birds like pelicans, egrets, terns, and more. Public parking, outdoor showers, and restrooms are available on the north side, with the beach just across the road.
