This Under-the-Radar Portuguese Beach Town Is Becoming Europe’s Hottest Food Destination

Every year, there are new “it” beach towns in Portugal to discover, and this year is the perfect time to explore outside of big, well-known cities like Lisbon and Porto. MICHELIN Guide just named its picks for the country’s best beach towns for foodies, covering the coastline and even the island of Madeira. One destination on the list stood out for how dramatically it’s transformed in just a few years: Comporta.

Located just two hours south of Lisbon, Comporta is framed by pine forests and rice fields meeting 28 miles of white sand. Once an under-the-radar coastal retreat in Portugal, it’s now the address Europe’s foodie crowd can’t stop name-dropping. Here’s why it’s worth visiting before the secret gets even less quiet.

Where the Michelin Buzz Is Coming From

So what changed to put Comporta on the map? The restaurant scene, mostly. What used to be a handful of small, local eateries has transformed into one of Portugal’s most exciting food destinations. A local favorite, Sublime Comporta is one of the pioneers that helped put the region on the culinary map.

The hotel’s restaurant, Sem Porta, takes traditional Portuguese cooking and gives it a contemporary spin, centered on seasonal, local ingredients. From May through October, things get even more interesting: acclaimed chef João Rodrigues brings a seasonal outpost of his project Canalha to the property, alongside an intimate tasting experience called Food Circle.

But the real draw here is Sublime Comporta Beach Club, with tables set directly in the sand and views over the dunes straight out to the Atlantic. Like most of Portugal’s coastal restaurants, the menu leans into fresh local fish and seafood. You’ll have a tough time leaving the view, it’s the kind of place where a long lunch quietly turns into a laid-back afternoon.

Where to Stay in Comporta

Sublime Comporta itself is the obvious answer. It’s a 42-acre estate with just 34 rooms, suites, and villas, designed to feel hidden and peaceful rather than flashy. If you want something a little more luxurious, Spatia Comporta is a 5-star boutique resort with standalone villas built around two pools, just minutes from the beach it’s named after.

Why You Should Visit Now

Comporta’s appeal is in how it’s kept its charm despite its growing popularity. Unlike other top beach destinations that get discovered and lose themselves in the process, Comporta has added new hotels, new restaurants, and more attention every year without turning into a version of itself built for tourists. Best of all, the beaches are mostly empty if you’re willing to walk far enough to find your own stretch of sand.

Comporta shows up on plenty of “next big thing” lists these days, but it hasn’t quite tipped over into overrun. Right now is the perfect window for experiencing its beauty before everyone else has the same idea.
