The Best European Beach Towns for Families, From Well-Known Favorites to Rising Coasts

What makes a beach family-friendly? Shallow access to the water is a great plus. Having all the necessary amenities for comfort is also nice. Proximity to supermarkets, bars, and restaurants is important, too. A selection of kid-oriented amusement parks, slides, and playgrounds will be perfect for keeping children busy.

You will find these kinds of beaches in Europe. And while the most popular destinations, such as Spain, Italy, and Greece, firmly hold the lead in tourist numbers, emerging coasts of Bulgaria and Albania are finally getting more attention among families. Here’s a list that includes both family travel hotspots and more affordable underdogs.

Ksamil, Albania

Best for value

Set between Greece and Montenegro, Albania is rapidly emerging as Europe’s hottest new family destination. This country offers hundreds of miles of turquoise Adriatic coastline and spectacular sandy beaches. Another big reason is affordability. A holiday in Sarande and Ksamil, the country’s popular resort towns on the south coast, will cost you less than a vacation in Spain or France. Ksamil, with its sapphire-blue beaches (often called “Adriatic Maldives”), is where to go with kids.

Teens will love exploring the ancient Roman ruins at Butrint National Archaeological Park. Take a boat trip to the Twin Islands of Ksamil for easy snorkeling. If you prefer larger resorts with all-inclusive options, choose Vlorë and Saranda, both of which offer well-priced, family-friendly accommodation.

Burgas Riviera, Bulgaria

Best for amusement parks and a long, sandy strip

Bulgaria is another budget-friendly option for families. Everything here works to keep your kids happy and amused. Burgas Riviera is the place to be. It includes the UNESCO-protected Nessebar, one of the Black Sea’s most charming seaside towns, along with the purpose-built resorts Sunny Beach and Sveti Vlas. Your kids will love the soft, golden sands of the main stretch of Sunny Beach. While the town is famous as Bulgaria’s party capital, this reputation is only reserved for the central strip.

The southern and northern ends of the beach are perfect for families, offering wallet-friendly megaresorts and immediate access to the sand. Sveti Vlas is the most tranquil of the Riviera towns and is ideal for vacationing with small kids. With 38 slides, Aquapark Nessebar is a cool day trip with younger ones. Action Aquapark is another kid entertainment option, with a mini zoo.

Alghero, Italy

Best for pristine, white-sand beaches

A clean, shallow beach is what parents need for peace of mind and a pleasant holiday with younger kids. Alghero, in Sardinia’s northeast, offers plenty of stretches like this. While in most Sardinian towns, the good beaches are usually quite a hassle to reach, in Alghero you would simply have to cross the road. The town’s main stretch, Spiaggia di San Giovanni, is already a beautiful sandy idyll. But the real gem is Spiaggia Maria Pia, a gorgeous, dune-backed strip on the northern outskirts of Alghero. The water is crystal-clear, the sand is sugary-white, and the setting is as beautiful as it gets in Italy.

Sandcastle-building and snorkeling are a must there. Also, you can easily reach other fantastic stretches, such as Spiaggia del Lazzaretto and Spiaggia de Le Bombarde, by public transport, or in a couple of minutes by rental car. Alghero itself is a historic gem, with a labyrinth of old streets, ancient ramparts, and scenic seafood restaurants overlooking the blue sea. The most exciting thing for families to do in Alghero is a trip to Grotta di Nettuno, a stunning cave kingdom on rocky Capo Caccia.

Menorca, Spain

Best for a quiet holiday and traveling with toddlers

Menorca is widely considered one of the best holiday destinations in Europe for families with younger kids. This Balearic island is famous for its small resort towns, built around spectacular coves. The infrastructure is top-notch, many beaches are shallow and suitable for kids, and you’ve got a great choice of family-friendly accommodation. Menorca’s vibe is far from the busy, buzzy, high-rise-filled resorts of Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. The island is fantastic for connecting with Mediterranean nature and enjoying the quieter side of Spanish holiday life.

The lagoon-like beach at Cala Galdana is the preferred family option. Another superb destination is Son Bou, offering a wilder, dune-backed bay. A livelier Cala en Bosch is where you find larger resorts and Parc aquàtic Aquarock, Menorca’s biggest water park.

Nerja, Spain

Best for charming whitewashed town and outdoor fun

While it’s part of Costa del Sol, Nerja lacks the crowds and tourist frenzy of purpose-built towns like Torremolinos and Benalmádena. Instead, you will find a photogenic Andalusian Old Town and a series of gorgeous beaches (that will remind you of the South California coast).

Nerja is a top option for vacationing with older kids, who love outdoor adventures. You can kayak to the beautiful Maro waterfalls, see the world’s largest stalactite at the Caves of Nerja, hike literally on water along the Chillar River trail, and enjoy snorkeling and paddleboarding. It will be a thrilling holiday. Even if you’re after chill beach leisure, Nerja is ideal. Beaches like Carabeo and Burriana are great for families.

Best for kid-friendly resorts and water parks

Istria has always been the family-first destination on the Croatian coast. This spectacular peninsula is home to pristine coves, lush pine forests, picture-perfect towns, and gorgeous national parks. Poreč is the epicenter of family leisure. You’ve got a perfect balance of a vibrant Old Town and superb beaches that are right beside each other. North of the city center, you find numerous resorts that cater specifically to families and offer animation programs and water slides.

For something closer to nature, check out the Lanterna resort, nestled in the heart of the pine forest. Poreč is also Istria’s amusement park capital, with attractions such as Aquacolors Poreč water park, Aquapark Istralandia, Dinopark Funtana, and Sky Fox Park with rope adventures.

Naxos, Greece

Best for a relaxed Greek family holiday

It’s easy to get lost choosing the best Greek island for family leisure. Naxos is always a top choice. The largest in the Cyclades, it’s the ultimate destination for sandy, shallow beaches. Its capital, the stunning Naxos Town, is comfortably flat, and the sandy Agios Georgios Beach is close to the center. The island is also one of the most affordable in the Cycladic group, so your wallet will thank you, too.

For more golden sand beaches, head to Agios Prokopios and Plaka. The towns around them are perfect for a hassle-free Greek vacation, where you enjoy the beach and sample Mediterranean food at tavernas. Naxos’ beaches are also great for your kids to try paddleboarding, windsurfing, and sea kayaking. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Dionysus will be a thrilling place to explore for young history buffs. And you can easily go on a return day trip to Santorini from Naxos.

Alcúdia, Spain

Best for lagoon-like beaches and history

Alcúdia’s gorgeous, 7-mile beach is a gift that keeps on giving for families with younger children. Hardly anywhere else in Europe do you find that combination – soft, white sand with transparent water, shallow seabed for hundreds of meters, and the feeling of swimming in a wading pool. That’s why Alcúdia is Mallorca’s best place for family holidays. It’s cheaper than the southwest resorts and features all the family-first amenities. Also, you’ve got Platja de Muro and Ca’n Picafort nearby, which are similarly good for vacationing with kids.

Then, there’s a history exploration part—Alcúdia is known for its well-preserved medieval part, where your kids can explore the old gates, walk among Roman ruins, and climb the ancient city ramparts. For fun, head to Hidropark Alcúdia to splash in the wave pool, ride the slides, and play mini-golf. Parque Natural de la Albufera, south of town, is great for cycling and hiking.

Best for family entertainment and superb beaches

Conveniently located between Nice and Cannes, the Antibes—Juan-les-Pins area is the French Riviera’s ultimate family-friendly area. First of all, it’s dazzling. Local beaches are sheltered and shallow, featuring soft sand. Antibes’ Old Town is among the coast’s most charming historic cores, where you can try typical Provencal food, visit a Sunday market, and climb the epic ramparts for the best sea views. Calm waters and fine sands await you in relaxed Juan-les-Pins.

The town is also great if your family prefers luxurious accommodation without the crowds. Port Vauban in Antibes is among the Riviera’s largest marinas, where you can find good charter deals to see the coast from the yacht. The Biot zone just outside Antibes is an amusement park cluster, where your family can visit the themed Antibes Land Park, play at Adventure Golf, and meet sea dwellers at Marineland. Day trips to Nice and Cannes are super easy with direct railway links.

Best universal resort town in Spain

Everything works for family leisure in Roses. It’s coastal Spain without crazy prices and crowds. A lesser-known town on the Costa Brava, north of Barcelona and just 20 miles from the French border, it offers everything families would love. The beach here is wide and shallow, featuring all the amenities. The boardwalk zone is all flat, so getting around with a stroller is a breeze. Your kids will definitely love the AquaBrava water park, with a massive, 3,000-square-meter wave pool and over 20 adventure rides.

Another highlight is the ride on a Tren Roses Express, a vintage tractor-pulled train in Cap de Creus Natural Park, passing some of Costa Brava’s most stunning coastal locations. If you’re traveling with older kids, make a day trip to Cadaqués, a picturesque whitewashed town famous for the Salvador Dalí House-Museum, which displays the artist’s works.
