Why Travelers Are Skipping Greece for This Balkan Beach Coast

If you still haven’t decided where your travels will take you in 2026, the editors at Chase Travel searched across the globe, taking a look at trends and some of the most enticing emerging destinations to help you decide where to go. You might think that an uncrowded, affordable beach destination has become somewhat of an oxymoron, but there is a surprising coastline that offers just that: the Albanian Riviera.

Only around 50 miles or so east of Salento, Italy, across the Strait of Otranto, you’ll discover this Balkan beauty. While countless travelers head to places like Santorini and Mykonos in the Greek Islands, Albania’s southwestern shores provide one of those rare, still budget-friendly, uncrowded beach getaways.

Ksamil

The Albanian Riviera generally runs from the city of Vlorë south to Ksamil near the Greek border, with multiple towns providing an ideal base, including the resort town of Ksamil that sits within Butrint National Park. It’s picture-perfect, with white, powdery soft sands lapped by brilliant turquoise waters. While it’s sometimes referred to as the “Maldives of Europe,” its beaches are backed by rugged mountains.

Ksamil is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its images splashed on Instagram, which means it does get busy in the summer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find tranquility. Its beaches range from more secluded stretches nestled into coves, like Lori and Mirror, to beaches with lively clubs like Bora Bora and Poda. Plus, there are four small islands (mostly uninhabited) nearby that provide even more peaceful sunbathing while easily accessible by kayak, SUP, or boat.

Dhermi

At the opposite end of the Albanian Riviera, posh Dhermi is a slice of paradise known for its affordable luxury with many outstanding hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals going for less than $100 a night. In fact, you can even find well-rated sea-view properties for as little as $30 a night. Dhermi Beach spans nearly a mile and includes less-developed, secluded sands in rocky coves where you can toss down your towels for free, along with stretches that have lounge chairs for rent. There are plenty of places to grab a cold beer or enjoy a meal right along the water.

The most stunning beach in the area may be Gjipe, about an hour’s hike south from Dhermi Beach, or less than a 15-minute drive. It’s surrounded by cliffs on three sides with the cobalt blue waters of the Ionian on the other. Much more laid-back than Dhermi, you’re unlikely to find many visitors here. While facilities are limited, there’s usually beer sold out of a van and loungers available for rent.

When to Go

The very best time to visit the Albanian Riviera is during the shoulder seasons of May through June, and from around mid-September through mid-October. There will be fewer tourists than there are in the peak of summer (July and August), and accommodation rates may be even cheaper, while the weather is pleasant and the sea is ideal for swimming. If you prefer your water warmer, aim for the second half of September, as the temperature rises with the hot sun of summer, making it especially comfortable now.
