Condé Nast Just Ranked This Under-the-Radar Mexican National Park Among the World’s Best

Condé Nast Traveler recently revealed its ranking of the world’s most beautiful national parks. As the publication notes, with thousands of them across the globe, it was no easy task. But as someone else has done the work for you, if you’re looking for striking natural beauty that includes sandy beaches and a breathtaking underwater world, that choice has just become a lot less challenging. 

Among the list is the stunning coastal wonder known as Cabo Pulmo National Park, located at the tip of the Baja California Sur Peninsula in Mexico. Although it is remote, it’s only a 90-minute drive from San Jose del Cabo International Airport. Just the last six miles of the route are unpaved, running down Camino Cabo Este into the village of Cabo Pulmo, and there’s no need for a four-wheel drive. 

Your reward for the adventure is soft, sandy shores with calm, crystal-clear blue waters, minus the crowds that Cabo and the Hotel Zone are known for. This practically untouched paradise is renowned for some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving. You can’t go wrong with any of these spots.

Right in front of the village, Playa Pulmo is the main hub for launching boat dives and snorkeling excursions out to a vibrant coral reef. Those farther from shore might see huge schools of jack fish, manta rays, and bull sharks. Right here, enjoy wide stretches of sand and local eateries within easy reach.

Located just a few miles south of Cabo Pulmo Village, Playa Los Arbolitos offers the best access for snorkeling from shore. The shallow, rocky reef is teeming with tropical fish such as angelfish, trumpetfish, and parrotfish. Keep an eye out for manta rays and sea turtles too. Between November and April, it’s also possible to see whale sharks and humpback whales.

While many beaches in this region lack facilities, Los Arbolitos has showers, restrooms, and parking for a small fee.

Los Frailes is sparsely developed so you’ll want to bring your own supplies, such as a picnic or ingredients for a barbecue, as pits are available. You’ll also find palapas for shade and toilets. If you want to dine out, head to one of the restaurants in Cabo Pulmo, just 4.5 miles north. The bay is sheltered here, with calm, crystal-clear turquoise water for swimming, snorkeling near the rocky point, or kayaking. 

Only a few miles from Cabo Pulmo village, Playa El Este is a quiet, undeveloped stretch with powdery soft, white sands and a gentle slope into calm water. It’s ideal for paddleboarding with views of the rugged desert cliffs, or simply soaking up the sun while enjoying some blissful relaxation.
