Ever heard the term pura vida? It seems Costa Rica’s national phrase might just be what helped make it rank among the world’s top 5 happiest countries. Translating to “pure life,” it represents an optimistic, relaxed lifestyle focused on kindness, gratitude, and minimizing stress, emphasizing that life is wonderful despite its challenges.
Released annually on March 20, the “International Day of Happiness,” the World Happiness Report is an analysis of 147 countries published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford in partnership with Gallup.
While Northern European countries dominated the top 10, Costa Rica was the standout, jumping from number 6 to number 4 as the only non-European country to crack the top 5. The tropical nation has been steadily climbing in recent years, rising all the way from No. 23 in 2023 to No. 4 in 2026.

Happiness Factors
Although the results are entirely based on self-reported perceptions of satisfaction, the rankings say the factors that contribute to the evaluation include
- A higher FDP per capita (economic strength and high wealth)
- A strong social support system (having friends or family to count on)
- Healthy life expectancy, including both physical and mental health longevity
- Greater freedom to make life choices
- Generosity, including volunteering and charitable giving
- The absence of corporate and government corruption
How Travelers Can Benefit from the Rankings
Travelers can use the World Happiness Report to identify destinations where they can enjoy a welcoming culture, with the rankings taking into account “generosity,” such as helping strangers. The high-ranking countries also indicate higher safety and security with low corruption to ensure a peaceful and more enriching travel experience.

Why Costa Rica
The first Latin American country to enter the top 5, the happiness of Costa Rica’s citizens is said to primarily be related to living an outdoor lifestyle and enjoying strong community ties. Its strong finish came during a year when global attention has been focused on the importance of social connection in overall happiness. It’s a place where quality of life is shaped by more than income, with the result suggesting that despite ongoing concerns about the cost of living and infrastructure, Costa Ricans continue to rate their lives highly by international standards.
Of course, travelers can also enjoy a wide range of unforgettable experiences in Costa Rica, from learning to surf or improving their skills out on the waves to ziplining and hiking through the jungle while watching for sloths, toucans, and monkeys.
