When Travel + Leisure recently released its expert ranking of the most beautiful places in Mexico, a tiny town made the list that you’ve probably never heard about, unless you’re an avid surfing enthusiast. El Pescadero lies where the cactus-filled desert meets the Pacific, about a 50-minute drive north of Cabo San Lucas along the Pacific coast and roughly 15 minutes south of Todos Santos.
While most beaches on Baja’s Pacific side aren’t swimmable due to powerful waves and strong currents, El Pescadero is home to Playa Cerritos. It’s not only one of the region’s rare stretches safe for swimming, but it also boasts some of the best surf breaks.
Swimming, Surfing, & More
The ability to surf or swim makes El Pescadero one of the top spots for a day at the beach outside of Cabo San Lucas, most notably at Playa Cerritos, a nearly three-mile stretch of soft sand. Lifeguards are on duty seasonally between December and April.
Wading and swimming are best near the main beach club along the central and northern sections of the bay, with shallow, sandy-bottom entries. These areas typically have gentle waves that are calm enough for the little ones to splash around in.
For surfing, you’ll find a section with waves perfect for beginning surfers, while waves for the more experienced are located near the cliffs at the western end. Surf schools with expert instructors provide lessons, and there are camps for kids, focusing on safety while helping them build confidence in the water. Stand-up paddleboarding is also possible, with gear rentals available for both SUP and surfing.
On the Beach
There’s plenty to do on the sand at Playa Cerritos too. With the beach spanning almost three miles, it’s a great place for long strolls, shell-searching, exploring tide pools, sandcastle building, and sunbathing. Horseback riding along the surf, ATV excursions, and seasonal whale watching (mid-December through mid-March) are all possible too.
If you just want to lounge around or dig into a good book, umbrellas and beach chairs can be rented from surf shacks and local vendors set up right along the main stretch. In need of some pampering? Professional massage therapists provide massages right on the sand.
In Town
The village of El Pescadero itself is a peaceful hamlet surrounded by incredible natural beauty, including rocky cliffs and rolling hills ideal for hiking and mountain biking. It also has a thriving pottery community along with numerous art studios and galleries for culture vultures. One of the best places to shop is the farmers’ market. Held at Baja Beans cafe from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, you’ll find everything from surf-inspired art and handmade jewelry to baked goods, coffee, and local produce.
