There were over 757,000 voters in the 38th annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey conducted by Conde Nast Traveler, helping to select the world’s best cities, divided into small and large categories. Among the top 5 small cities was San Juan, Puerto Rico, a destination that offers a lot for travelers, from its exotic Spanish-Caribbean vibe and historic landmarks to unique shopping opportunities, mouthwatering cuisine, and beautiful beaches.
As the publication notes, San Juan is a place where strangers meet and become “fast friends over frosty Medalla beers and slow sunsets” in courtyard cafes, but it’s also a destination ideal for an affordable beach getaway in the Caribbean with no need for a passport as a U.S. territory.
The Beaches
With temperatures around 80 degrees throughout the year and over 270 miles of coastline, Puerto Rico is ideal for beach-hopping, but there are several right in the capital itself, located along the northeastern coast.
Isla Verde is a popular place to spend the day as one of the very best beaches within easy reach of San Juan, just outside the city limits. It boasts soft, white sands and calm turquoise water for swimming. Watersports like parasailing and jet skiing (rentals available), can be enjoyed too. Playita del Condado is a small urban beach that’s even closer when you’re in need of a quick dip, just a few minutes from Old San Juan. El Escambron isn’t much further, located next to the Caribe Hilton. As it’s protected by reefs, it’s great for snorkeling.

Beyond the Sand
When you’re ready for a break from the beach, there’s plenty of other things to do. Explore the rich history of Old San Juan, the charming historic district with cobbled streets lined with colonial buildings, including the massive El Morro fortress and country’s oldest church, San Juan Bautista Cathedral, dating to 1521. It even holds the tomb of Puerto Rico’s first governor, Ponce de Léon. You can also tour the home of his family, La Casa Blanca.
When it comes to shopping, dining, and nightlife, you’ll have no shortage of options. There are lively markets, independent venues selling unique handcrafted items, and a mega mall. Plaza Las Americas is located at the end of the Hato Rey district and hosts more than 300 stores as the largest of its kind in the Caribbean.
Authentic Puerto Rican dishes can be enjoyed at Bebo’s Cafe, a local eatery where you can try everything from empanadillas (savory turnovers filled with various ingredients like cheese, meat, or vegetables) to bacalaitos (salted codfish fritters). Afterward, dance the night away at La Placita de Santurce.
