Dubai Named the World’s Sunniest Beach Destination, New Study Finds

While some getaways are fine in the rain, with lots of indoor attractions, when it comes to beach vacations, you’re probably looking for fun in the sun. When the last thing you want to do is end up stuck inside, choosing a destination where sunshine is abundant is key.

Fortunately, you won’t have to spend hours researching to try to figure out where to go, thanks to the Holiday Happiness Index study. Conducted by BookRetreats.com in collaboration with a Harvard-affiliated clinical psychologist and holistic happiness expert, Natalie Dattilo-Ryan, the study looked at 50 different destinations across the globe. When the number of annual sunshine hours was combined with “feel good” factors, including physical exercise, time in nature, and quality of sleep, Dubai came out as the No. 1 place for fun in the sun.

Endless Sunshine Without the Triple-Digit Heat: When to Go

Dubai boasts nearly 3,600 hours of sunlight a year. It’s famously hot in the summer, seeing temperatures that often soar to well over 100 degrees, so to enjoy the sun without melting, the best time to visit is between November and March. During this period, expect much more pleasant temperatures in the low 80s, ideal for spending time on the sand, swimming, relaxing at renowned beach clubs, and dining in rooftop eateries.

Top Beaches in Dubai

While Dubai is famously home to one of the world’s largest malls and Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building at 2,717 feet, it offers plenty of picturesque beaches too. Some of the best stretches to spend time on include Sunset Beach, with iconic views of Burj Al Arab and glorious sunsets. JBR Beach is a great pick for beachfront dining and watersports, while the secluded Black Palace Beach is the perfect place to surround yourself in tranquility while enjoying turquoise waters and Palm Jumeirah views.

For one of the most luxurious experiences on pristine white sands, White Beach at the Atlantis The Palm is hard to beat, as a high-end beach club providing the ultimate in upscale relaxation.

Beyond Dubai: Other Sunny Locations to Consider

Of course, Dubai isn’t the only sunny destination to consider. There are several other coastal locations on the study’s list, including Los Angeles. The city is home to famous beaches Santa Monica Beach with its iconic pier and Ferris wheel and Venice Beach, offering all the usual activities plus great people watching and unique buskers for entertainment.

Athens, Greece made the list too—while it probably doesn’t come to mind for a beach vacation, the Athenian Riviera is just outside the city center, offering beautiful sandy beaches with clear aquamarine waters. They range from natural stretches for tossing down a towel, sunbathing, and swimming, to chic spots in Glyfada and Vouliagmeni with watersports rentals, umbrellas, and loungers.
