If you’ve been putting off making plans for a getaway in July, as one of the most popular months for a vacation, now is the time to book. Yahoo! Travel just made that a bit easier with its list of the best destinations in the U.S. for an idyllic summer escape. And, the No. 1 pick? The San Juan Islands. Located off the mainland of Washington State, it’s long been one of my favorites, with each island in the archipelago offering something unique.
There are over 175 named islands and reefs, but just 16 are inhabited, with a significant portion of the smaller, unpopulated islands part of the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge. San Juan Island and Orcas Island are the two most popular, although Shaw and Lopez islands are worth considering as well. All four are connected by ferry from Anacortes—Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan can also be reached via flight.

San Juan Island
San Juan Island is the primary hub for tourism and the most populated of all the islands. It’s home to the picturesque town of Friday Harbor, which is where the ferries from Anacortes arrive. This is where you’ll find many shops, art galleries, farm- and sea-to-table eateries, and the Whale Museum. Accommodations are wide-ranging, including historic resorts on the water, cabin rentals, B&Bs, and boutique hotels.
For those who are hoping to spot orcas, this island is your best bet, with Lime Kiln State Park a popular point for viewing from shore. There are also plenty of whale-watching boat tours and kayak excursions, bringing opportunities for closer encounters.

Orcas Island
Orcas is the largest and lushest island, referred to by locals as the “gem of the San Juans.” It’s home to the highest mountain in the archipelago, Mount Constitution in Moran State Park. By hiking to the top, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and island-dotted Salish Sea. After making your descent, you might enjoy a dip in Cascade Lake. Pedal boats and SUPs are available for rent if the water is too chilly.
While nature is the primary focus on Orcas, the artsy village of Eastsound is the primary hub. It’s home to the largest number of boutiques and eateries, while boasting a culinary scene renowned for its hyper-local Pacific Northwest fare showcasing farm-fresh ingredients and sustainable seafood. A diverse mix of accommodation awaits, including historic waterfront properties, private vacation rentals, B&Bs, and secluded rustic cabins.

Lopez Island
The third largest of the San Juan Islands, Lopez is the place to go to enjoy a much slower pace of life, bucolic charms, and beautiful scenery, including water and mountain views. Known as the “friendly island,” it’s all about nature and living on island time. Stroll driftwood-strewn beaches and watch for wildlife, including frequent sightings of bald eagles and deer. Hiking, biking, and kayaking are all popular too.
There are no malls or department stores on Lopez, but you will find galleries, shops, a winery, a bakery, a handful of restaurants, and plenty of accommodation options, from cabin rentals to cozy B&Bs and inns.

Shaw Island
Just 7.7 square miles in size with a population of roughly 200, Shaw is the perfect place to immerse yourself in serenity and enjoy outdoor activities like swimming, fishing, hiking, and cycling. Many come to explore the narrow country roads on foot or two wheels. With very little traffic, they’re ideal for tranquil walks and bike rides, with spectacular views in every direction, from dense forest to beaches and the sea. At Shaw Island County Park, you’ll find a sandy beach, tide pools, and waterfront campsites.
Shaw feels like a world away from the chaos of the city, with not one streetlight, full-service restaurant, or hotel. There is a taproom for drinks and light bites, but it’s generally best to pick up groceries and other supplies at the general store. Other than camping, accommodation is limited to a few private vacation rentals, including oceanfront cottages.
