This Private Caribbean Island Is a Celeb Favorite—And You Can Actually Stay There

When it comes to Caribbean islands that tend to draw a lot of celebrities, you might think of St. Bart’s or even Richard Branson’s Necker Island, but there’s a destination in St. Vincent and the Grenadines that attracts plenty of VIP that most travelers haven’t heard about.

As Travel + Leisure recently highlighted, Mustique has a reputation for being an “if you know, you know” destination, drawing the celebrity elite who can truly escape the outside world. It’s one of the 32 islands in this Caribbean nation, and If it sounds familiar, it might be because Prince William and Kate frequently vacation there, including a stay to celebrate Prince George’s birthday. But it’s been a royal favorite for decades, ever since Princess Margaret was gifted land to build her home here.

Beyond the Royals

Just a few of the well-known figures beyond the royals who have enjoyed getaways on Mustique or even own homes on the island, include Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams, Tommy Hilfiger, Emma Stone, Kelly Ripa, Justin Bieber, Kate Moss, and songwriter Noel Gallagher.

Despite royalty, rock stars, models, and all types of Hollywood stars visiting the island, it’s not all about pretentiousness. In fact, it’s rather the opposite. Though chic, guests can let loose and not worry about looking perfect for the camera, whether paparazzi or Instagram photo ops.

Where to Stay

While Mustique is privately owned, anyone can stay here by booking a room or suite (most featuring private plunge pools) at its only hotel, Cotton House, a coral-white boutique resort built in French West Indies style. Or reserve one of 80+ private villas, all of which come with chefs, butlers, housekeepers, swimming pools, and anywhere from two to nine bedrooms.

What to Do

Mustique is a place where you can enjoy long, lazy days at one of the many beautiful white sandy beaches, play a round or two on the golf course, or hit the ball back and forth on the tennis court. There are a handful of shops “downtown,” an enticing little area with a bakery and coffee shop where assorted clothing and knick-knacks are sold. A general store offers souvenirs and liquor, in addition to hosting the popular local bar, Basil’s. It’s the place to go when the sun begins to set and the live music begins, renowned for its cocktails and lobster.
