Croatia has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially after its beauty and rich history were showcased on the hit series “Game of Thrones.” Dubrovnik is its most popular city, drawing many fans of the show to its walled historic center that served as King’s Landing, in addition to being overwhelmed by cruise ship tourists.
Split, on the other hand, is popular, but it’s generally less crowded and more authentic, while still offering impressive historic landmarks, “Game of Thrones” filming sites, beautiful beaches, and much more. My favorite Croatian city, you can be soaking up the sun and swimming in turquoise waters one minute and the next, exploring the massive 4th-century Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace.
The problem is, there has never been a direct flight between the United States and Split, requiring multiple connections, a long drive, or an even longer bus ride from Dubrovnik. Thankfully, that’s all about to change. United Airlines is launching the only nonstop service between the U.S. and Split on April 30, flying from New York/Newark (EWR). A seasonal route during the peak travel period, there will be three flights per week through early September 2026.
If Split hasn’t been on your radar, that’s just one of many reasons the ancient city should be on your must-visit travel list for 2026.

Historical Attractions & ‘GOT’ Sites
Diocletian’s Palace is the top historical attraction, home to some of the world’s most well-preserved Roman architecture, including the Cathedral of St. Dominus, one of the world’s oldest Catholic cathedrals, built in 305 AD. The vast, maze-like complex with narrow streets and alleyways that will take you back through time, while also serving as a hub for daily life, with many independent shops, art galleries, wine bars, and restaurants.
The palace cellars are also open to the public and were the very place where Daenerys trained her dragons in “Game of Thrones.” The vestibule was used for scenes involving the Unsullied, while the ancient streets of the complex served as a backdrop for the streets in the city of Meereen.

Beaches & Outdoor Adventures
Most of Croatia’s beaches are made up of pebbles, but Split is home to sandy Bacvice Beach, just a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal along the promenade. It’s the perfect place to unwind with a view of the crystal-clear turquoise waters, the mountains, and spectacular sunsets. Swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking are all possible here. When you’re ready to relax, you’ll find umbrellas and beach chairs for rent along with trendy beachfront bars and cafes.
For a more tranquil atmosphere, there are a series of beaches at the foot of nearby Marjan Hill, which is another popular attraction. Climbing the hill (a short but steep ascent) brings a panoramic view over the city, harbor, and nearby islands.

The Culinary Scene
In between sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors, you can look forward to indulging in Split’s outstanding culinary scene. It features lots of fresh-caught seafood, truffles, wild herbs, regionally produced olive oils, and many Italian-influenced dishes, with risotto and pastas the staples. And the wine! Focusing heavily on Dalmatian indigenous varieties, it includes bold reds like Plavac Mali and refreshing whites like Pošip, providing plenty of delicious offerings to pair with all your meals.
