This South Pacific Beach Was Just Named the World’s Most ‘Paradise-Like’

When you envision that quintessential “paradise-like” beach, you probably picture soft chalk-white sands dotted with palms and lapped by water in brilliant shades of blue, but where is it? Most of us know what we’re dreaming of when it comes to that perfect beach, but few can pinpoint their exact locations. Maybe the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, or the South Pacific?

According to Travel + Leisure, the tourism company Kuoni decided to find out by analyzing over 180 globally known beaches, based on the recommendations of leading travel publications and their own travel expertise. Each beach was analyzed by positive traveler reviews on various popular review platforms, with the researchers specifically looking for the word “paradise” in the content or title to determine the world’s No. 1 most paradise-like beach.

And the winner?

If you guessed the South Pacific, you’re right. It was Port Olry Beach in the island nation of Vanuatu. The team noted that its impressive combination of natural tropical scenery with lush greenery framing the pristine sands, edged by shimmering turquoise waters, convenient facilities, and a lack of crowds.

So, Where is Vanuatu?

If you haven’t heard of Vanuatu, you’re not alone. While cruise ships occasionally make quick stops on one side of the country’s main island, the archipelago is rarely on tourists’ radar. Just south of the Solomon Islands, west of Fiji, in the Melanesia subregion, Port Olry Beach can be found at the northeastern tip of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu’s largest island.

What to Do

While you could simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery, there are many possible activities at Port Olry Beach. Swimming, snorkeling, walking to Malet Island at low tide, and kayaking to nearby islands like Malmas are just a few of the possibilities. Plus, Port Olry lookout offers scenic views and can be reached via a guided horseback riding or 4WD tour. Afterward, there are beach cafes for dining on fresh lobster and other seafood with your toes in the sand.

Where to Stay

Many tourists visit Port Olry on day trips from the main town of Luganville, about an hour and 20-minute drive away. If you want to plan your trip around it, it’s possible to stay on the beachfront in rustic bungalows or even a treehouse at the Serenity Restaurant and Treehouse Bungalows. More beach bungalow accommodation and hotels can be found scattered along the coast between Luganville and Port Olry.
