When a research team at the international eSim provider Holafly analyzed cities around the world to determine which were the most relaxing, they used various factors linked to emotional and physical well-being. After looking into elements like happiness, the average annual hours of sunshine, air quality, access to nature reserves and parks, spas, and traffic congestion, San Diego was the destination that came out on top.
If you’ve ever lived or visited San Diego, the result probably isn’t all that surprising. It’s a beautiful city, home to 266 parks and nature reserves, more than any other city the team analyzed on their list. It also enjoys the sunniest climate with over 3,050 hours of sunlight annually, and, there are 359 spas and wellness centers to choose from when you’re in need of some pampering.
One of the biggest draws of San Diego is its beaches, providing many perfect places to relax while enjoying beautiful scenery and the tranquil sounds of the waves.
With more than 70 miles of coastline, there are plenty to choose from, but we can help you narrow down your options with some of our favorites for a blissful day soaking up the sun and the sand.
Seascape Beach
Located in the Solana Beach neighborhood, Seascape requires descending a long flight of stairs, which helps to keep the crowds away even during the popular summer months. You won’t have to worry about finding a space to toss down a beach blanket or roll out a towel, making it easy to enjoy the beauty in peace. If you visit in the winter, it’s a good spot for watching migrating humpback and gray whales.

Wipeout Beach
While La Jolla is home to popular (and busy) La Jolla Cove, Wipeout Beach is in the same area and offers a more secluded stretch that’s ideal for sunbathing. At low tide, you can also explore sea caves and search through tidepools to look for all sorts of colorful marine creatures like sea anemones, hermit crabs, and starfish.
Mission Beach
Mission Beach is one of the most well-known beaches in San Diego, but by heading to the southern end, you can enjoy a more peaceful, laid-back atmosphere for sunbathing and swimming. It’s ideal if you also want to have easy access to the boardwalk and attractions like historic Belmont Park with rides, carnival games, and a huge arcade with classic and modern games.

Coronado Beach
No beach getaway in San Diego would be complete without Coronado. There’s plenty of space here as a long strip with sand that sparkles as it contains the mineral mica. While the heart of the beach can be busy, you’ll find a quieter, less crowded experience by heading to either end. It’s the perfect place to relax under the nearly always sunny skies, search for seashells, or enjoy a refreshing swim with lifeguards here year-round.
