Copenhagen Is the World’s Happiest City — and It Has Stunning Beaches Too

Every year, the Happy City Index reviews 1,000 cities around the world to determine the happiest communities. It’s based on a variety of factors, such as work-life balance, well-being strategies, access to healthcare, green spaces, and sustainability. The world’s happiest city for 2026? Copenhagen, Denmark. In fact, it’s been the No. 1 happiest city globally for three consecutive years now.

Those who live there say there’s always something to do and something new to experience. The Danish capital puts in extensive effort into curating experiences for its residents. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they have a strong social safety net with taxes viewed as an investment in society through free university tuition, generous paid time off, and universal healthcare. Danes also embrace the concept of hygge, which is a deliberate focus on comfort and meaningful human connection.

All that, and Copenhagen also boasts stunning white sand beaches. That’s something you might not expect in a Scandinavian country, but Danish beaches are integrated perfectly into urban life. They’re easily accessible from the historical heart of the capital, while the harbor and surrounding waters are pristine. That means you can safely swim at nearby coastlines or even right in the city center.

Visitors to Copenhagen can also enjoy some of the world’s best restaurants. Its renowned culinary scene is focused on the “New Nordic” food movement, featuring hyper-local and seasonal, foraged ingredients, experimental fermentation, and avant-garde techniques. Royal palaces, one of the oldest operating amusement parks on the planet, and the beaches are just a few of the other attractions here.

The only question for beachgoers is which to experience.
