When the 2026 winners were recently announced, Hanalei Bay was revealed as the very best beach on the lush island of Kauai. Located on the North Shore, about five miles from Princeville, it often appears on lists of the world’s most spectacular.

The Stunning Natural Beauty
Hanalei Bay stretches from the iconic Hanalei Pier, originally built in 1892, to Waipa, forming one of the state’s largest bays. It’s long attracted photographers and artists who come to capture its stunning beauty. The crescent-shaped beach features over two miles of ivory sand. Lapped by Easter-egg-blue water that reflects the sky, while backed by emerald mountains including the iconic peak of Makana, rising from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the scene is almost surreal.
What to Do at Hanalei Bay
Many simply come to take advantage of the photo ops or to lay out a towel and relax with an awe-inspiring view, but it’s also possible to swim, snorkel, kayak, or paddleboard. During the winter, the waves swell at the right side of the beach, making it popular for surfing. Year-round, one can enjoy tranquil barefoot strolls on the soft sands, picnicking, and fishing from the iconic Hanalei Pier, a landmark dating to 1892.
Stick around until dusk, as a sunset from the pier is unforgettable. Look behind you, and you’ll see the mountains glowing in shades of orange and pink.
Facilities
Hanalei Bay has three beach park areas: the Hanalei Pavilion, Black Pot, and Waiʻoli/Pine Trees. Black Pot has outdoor showers for rinsing off, and public restrooms near the mouth of the river and the pier. The others provide more outdoor showers and restrooms at the pavilion and throughout the mid-bay areas.
There are no food stands or eateries of any type, but Hanalei town is only two minutes on foot from the beach and has several restaurants, a grocery store, and surf shops.
When to Visit
In Hawaii, there are just two seasons, summer and winter. During the summer (May through September), Hanalei Bay will be flat and calm. It’s ideal for paddling, swimming, and snorkeling, often with excellent visibility and abundant marine life, particularly near the pier pilings at Black Pot. Winter (October through April) brings large swells and dangerous surf, with waves suitable only for experienced surfers. It’s a great time to watch the experts and simply enjoy the scenery.
