Who Needs the Ocean? The Great Lakes’ Best Beach Towns Have Plenty to Offer

When it comes to beach vacations, many travelers automatically assume that a great beach getaway requires a stay somewhere along the coast.

If you’re one of them, don’t overlook the incredible beaches that may be much closer to home. For those living in the Midwest or Great Plains, it’s often far easier—and more affordable—to skip the salty ocean and head to the Great Lakes for a classic beach vacation.

That said, even if you live near the coast, the Great Lakes are still well worth a visit. If you’ve never been, rest assured these lakes live up to their name. They’re massive—so vast, in fact, that they often feel more like an ocean than a lake, complete with sandy beaches, rolling waves, and waterfront towns.

In short, you can enjoy a beach vacation on the Great Lakes that’s every bit as memorable as one in a coastal U.S. beach town. Intrigued? Here are some of the best beach towns along the Great Lakes to add to your travel list.

Mackinac Island

If you’ve heard of any famous Great Lakes destinations, you’ve probably heard of Mackinac Island. Historic and exceptionally charming, Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron. As soon as you arrive, you’re going to instantly see why so many people absolutely love it here.

To start, the whole island is a National Historic Landmark, and 80% of the island is situated within Mackinac Island State Park. There are zero motor vehicles and everyone gets around via carriage (yes, carriage!) or bike. The architecture is Victorian and Greek Revival. The views are spectacular.

A few fun facts? The island is known as the Fudge Capital of the World, its Grand Hotel features the world’s longest porch, and the local Butterfly House is the third-oldest of its kind in the country.

St. Joseph, Michigan

St. Joseph, Michigan, has been called many things, including the most romantic city in Michigan and the Riviera of the Midwest. Learn why it’s earned these monikers when you make a trip out to the small town on Lake Michigan, with its resort-style feel.

Silver Beach is frequently touted as a top favorite, family-friendly spot here, though you can also find other beaches if Silver Beach is too crowded for your liking. The downtown is walkable and filled with local businesses. Plus, because the town is located on a bluff (with a park and stairs running down to the water and beach, as well as a pier), you’ll never be far away from some truly great views.

Door County, Wisconsin

It’s worth noting, though, that another destination in this part of the country also lays claim to the “Riviera of the Midwest” title: Door County, Wisconsin. (To be fair, I’m partial to Door County’s other nickname: the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.”)

Yes, it’s an entire county rather than a single beach town, but it feels like one cohesive destination. Occupying a peninsula that stretches into northern Lake Michigan, Door County boasts nearly 300 miles of shoreline.

With five state parks, more than a dozen charming villages, a vibrant culinary and arts scene, and plenty of family-friendly attractions, there’s something here for just about everyone. When you’re not relaxing at the beach, you can paddle, hike, explore local wineries and orchards, browse antique shops and art galleries, or enjoy classic seaside amusements like mini golf and go-karting.

Winthrop Harbor, Illinois

If your main reason for visiting waterfront destinations is to get out on the water—in whatever vessel you choose—then Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, deserves a spot on your list.

Located about halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee on the shores of Lake Michigan, this small community is home to the largest freshwater marina in the United States: North Point Marina. If you don’t have a boat of your own, you can easily charter one. Fishing charters are especially popular, thanks to the area’s abundant salmon and trout.

Not interested in boating? No problem. Other outdoor adventures are just as plentiful, especially at nearby Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park, where you’ll find sandy shoreline, hiking trails, campgrounds, and plenty of space to enjoy nature.

Traverse City

Much like Door County and Mackinac Island, Traverse City has grown a reputation as a top-tier Great Lakes vacation spot—and for plenty of good reasons. There’s a lot to love.

The waters of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay are known for their clarity and vibrant blue hue. Then, there’s Sleeping Bear Dunes, also renowned for their beauty. The huge dunes on the lake are great for a hike (though you have more accessible shoreline options as well).

Meanwhile, Traverse City and the surrounding area is known as the Cherry Capital of the World, responsible for nearly 80% of the country’s tart cherries. As such, you won’t want to miss the annual National Cherry Festival. There’s also the Traverse Wine Coast, with its more than 40 wineries.

Add in local shopping, farm-to-table dining, and a thriving arts and culture scene, and it’s easy to see why this small destination—with all its amenities and attractions—has earned the popularity it enjoys today.

Grand Marais, Minnesota

Further west, on the shores of Lake Superior, Grand Marais has been dubbed America’s Best Small Lake Town, as well as America’s Coolest Small Town. Branding itself as quirky and creative, it’s a harbor town that appeals to artists.

Channel your own creativity when taking in the views from Artist’s Point, visiting the oldest art colony in the state, and taking a class at North House Folk School.

When you’re ready to head to the beach, you’ve got a few options. Rockhounds will want to visit the aptly named Agate Beach. Sable Falls Beach offers a more scenic experience, combining shoreline relaxation with forested beauty as you explore nearby Sable Falls, part of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The 75-foot waterfall flows down toward Lake Superior, and a trail and long staircase lead you to the overlook before continuing on to the sand-and-rock beach below. For something a bit more accessible that doesn’t require hiking boots, Woodland Park Beach is a great choice.

Ashland, Wisconsin

Another Lake Superior destination, Ashland, Wisconsin, provides excellent access to the Apostle Islands, and is thus known as the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Furthermore, it’s the Historic Mural Capital of Wisconsin—great fun for those who want to track the more than 20 murals across downtown.

There are multiple beaches to choose from, including Maslowski Beach, Kreher Park, and Bayview Beach, all of which are outfitted with amenities like restrooms, playgrounds, and pavilions.

Cobourg, Ontario

When considering potential destinations, don’t forget that the Great Lakes sit along the United States’ shared border with Canada. If you’re after a relaxing beach trip, you may want to skip some of the larger Canadian Great Lakes cities, like Toronto. That said, you’ll still find just as many charming beach towns on the Canadian side as you will on this side of the border.

Take Cobourg, Ontario, for instance, which is on Lake Ontario. Fully embracing the beach destination identity, Cobourg has developed a beautiful waterfront with a boardwalk that connects Cobourg Beach to the harbor and marina, which is within walking distance of downtown. Those traveling with a bicycle in tow can take to the Ontario Great Lakes Waterfront Trail

Meanwhile, those with an interest in local history should visit the 1800s Victoria Hall and its Old Bailey Courtroom, as well as the Cobourg & Area Museum.

Port Austin, Michigan

On Lake Huron, Port Austin is a resort town with plenty of sandy beaches, and tons of opportunities for appreciating the stunning natural surroundings. One of Port Austin’s landmarks is Turnip Rock, a rock formation that sits out in the water and, yes, looks like a turnip. You can paddle out to it, and paddling in general is a top activity here. The Dark Sky Preserve at Port Crescent State Park serves up jaw-dropping stargazing experiences. Meanwhile, birders will want to make tracks for the Huron County Nature Center & Wilderness Arboretum.

South Bass Island, Ohio

Sitting in Lake Erie, South Bass Island belongs to Ohio, and its village of Put-in-Bay is another Great Lakes destination with a nickname that tells you exactly what you’re in for: the Key West of the Midwest.

There’s plenty to do here, with restaurants, shops, and attractions all easily accessible from the mainland by ferry, boat, or plane. Leaning into the Key West vibes, you’ll also find plenty of bars and nightlife spots. That said, don’t assume this is just an adults-only escape—families are well catered for, too. If you’re traveling with kids, you can fill your days exploring the butterfly house and Perry’s Cave, renting jet skis, or playing a round of mini golf.

If you can carve out a little time between the fun, make sure to visit Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, a tribute to the War of 1812 and home to the world’s tallest Doric column.
