When it comes to the best beaches in the U.S., Hawaii’s exotic stretches often make the list, but the Big Island’s are usually overlooked, better known for its rugged coastline with black volcanic sands. But it also boasts a stunning beach with pristine white sands that you’ve probably never heard about: Hapuna.
Hapuna Beach State Park was just named among the best in the country in the 38th edition of CN Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, landing at No. 5 based on the opinions of more than 757,000 of its readers.
Tucked along the Kohala Coast, about 30 miles north of popular Kailua-Kona, it lies on the island’s largest stretch of white coral sand, resulting in remarkably clear, calm azure waters as far as the eye can see, as CNT notes. If you’ve ever visited the Big Island, you know that it’s a rarity here, providing the perfect spot for everyone from romance-seeking couples and families with children to outdoor adventurers.
What to Do
Hapuna is a wide, long stretch, spanning about a half-mile from one lava point to the other, so you’ll have plenty of space for sunbathing and other activities on the soft sands. It’s one of the best beaches for swimming on the Big Island, with lifeguards staffed at several stations. At the north end, there’s a cove with shallow water and a sandy bottom where kids can splash around. Most mornings during the summer months, the water is calm, but if you want to do some boogie boarding, come later in the day when there are usually some moderate waves.
Couples can look forward to romantic strolls along the surf and watching glorious sunsets together. All who visit in the winter will find a prime spot for whale watching, with thousands of humpbacks in Hawaii‘s waters during the season. Those who like to hike can access the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail from here. The 175-mile route runs right through and offers breathtaking coastal views.

When to Go
For a family-friendly visit with opportunities to swim, the best time to visit Hapuna is in the summer when the water is at its calmest, but this is also the busiest time of year with kids out of school. May through early June and mid-September through mid-October can be a good balance with the biggest crowds gone and days when the water is calm enough for swimming.
November and December are some of the island’s wettest months, but if you visit in January or February, you’ll have the best chance of spotting whales and catching the waves.
Facilities
The beach park offers a number of conveniences, including picnic pavilions with tables, restrooms, showers, several cafes, and camping areas. Plus, the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is only steps away and hosts the Naupaka Beach Grill, open to guests and non-guests alike.
