The World’s Most Beautiful Beach in 2026 Is a Tiny Mexican Island Most People Have Never Heard Of

The Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best, selected based on thousands of community reviews, just named Isla Pasion in Mexico as the No. 1 beach in the world for 2026. It managed to beat out some of the most famously beautiful, including last year’s top pick, Elafonissi Beach in Greece, known for its stunning pink sands.

If this island doesn’t sound familiar, you’re not alone. It’s managed to remain mostly under the radar, located just north of Cozumel. While the island of Cozumel has long been a popular spot for divers and day trippers arriving by ferry from Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula, few manage to make it to isolated Isla Pasion.

A Postcard-Perfect Scene

This island is tiny, at just under a mile long, but as they say, great things come in small packages. It boasts soft, white powdery sand lapped by clear, brilliant turquoise water, a classic postcard-perfect Caribbean scene. With its small size, the buildings on Isla Pasion are no bigger than shacks, adding to the charm. It’s like entering a whole new world, far from the busy tourist areas, providing a much more tranquil atmosphere for relaxation and activities.

Things to Do

Many come to lounge in hammocks or on the beach in between swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, or kayaking. Snorkeling is a top activity, with the area surrounded by the world’s second-largest reef system. It provides habitat for over a thousand marine species. Combined with the water’s striking clarity, the experience is not to be missed.

While underwater, you might find yourself surrounded by everything from rays, hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles to numerous tropical fish, including the colorful toadfish with its bright yellow fins that can’t be seen anywhere else on the planet.

Facilities

Isla Pasion is so small that structures here are no bigger than shacks. It basically operates as a private, all-inclusive beach club, providing access to the hammocks, lounge chairs, and umbrellas. There’s a buffet eatery serving international and Mexican food along with cocktails, beer, water, and soft drinks. Snorkeling equipment, paddleboards, kayaks, and beach games are all available too.

How to Get to Isla Pasion

There are multiple options for getting to Isla Pasion. You can catch a taxi from the Punta Langosta cruise terminal to the pier at the north end of Cozumel along Bahia Ciega, or if you have a rental car, you can make the roughly 30-minute drive independently. Once there, you’ll hop on the small ferry for the 5- to 10-minute ride that crosses the typically calm waters of the lagoon.

Boat tours leaving from the same cruise terminal can get you to the island in about 45 minutes by jet boat, which is typically a smooth ride, but when the water is choppy, it’s best to avoid this option if you have any back problems.
