Why Couples Are Choosing Palma for Their European Honeymoon Right Now

There are many reasons to love the Balearic island of Mallorca, renowned for its sandy beaches, gastronomy, vibrant nightlife, and even exceptional hiking trails, which were recently named Europe’s No. 1 island for the activity. But when it comes to choosing exactly where to stay while visiting Mallorca, it’s hard to beat the sun-soaked capital of Palma.

Located on the southeast coast along the Bay of Palma in the Mediterranean Sea, Palma (or Palma de Mallorca as it’s officially called) is the perfect mix of culture, shopping, vibrant nightlife, and opportunities for outdoor adventure, including relaxation and activities on urban beaches, minus the need for a car.

Why Honeymooners Are Choosing Palma Right Now

In recent years, Palma has quietly reinvented itself as one of Europe’s most compelling honeymoon destinations. This city offers something for every type of traveler, including honeymooners. And right now, it’s having a moment.

“Couples can immerse themselves into culture, gastronomy and design while still enjoying the rhythm of Mediterranean island life,” says Pedro Homar, Director of Tourism for Visit Palma. “Our destination has everything a traveler would expect from a city break European hub—including Michelin-starred fine-dining experiences, art-filled tours at one of Palma’s museums, or historic sights like the Palma Cathedral, Bellver Castle, and the Royal Palace of Almudaina.”

Just minutes east of the city center, Playa de Palma offers a long stretch of beach lapped by shallow, clear turquoise water, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and various water sports. There’s also a seafront promenade with a variety of shops and eateries —and, after dark, it becomes a top clubbing spot.

One of Palma’s greatest strengths is that it rewards visitors year-round. It’s possible to avoid the crowds during the busy summer months for a more tranquil escape that combines breathtaking natural scenery and cultural experiences during the off-season. “We encourage travelers to seek out a Palma escape during the offseason, where both cultural and incredible scenic experiences are abundant during the shorter months of the year,” Homar adds.

Experiences Worth Planning Ahead

A serious food city, Palma offers many culinary experiences, but one of the best is a traditional Mallorca cooking workshop. “One of my favorite experiences in Palma is a traditional Mallorcan cooking workshop at Forn De Sa Llotgeta,” says Homar. “Founded by Mallorcan Chef Deborah Piña, this is a true market-to-table experience. Couples will have the chance to explore Mercado del Olivar—the largest market in the city—stopping by the various fruit, fish, and produce stalls. Once the ingredients for the day are secured, couples will start a hands-on cooking workshop to prepare a complete Mallorcan seasonal menu together.”

The museums are well worth building into any Palma honeymoon itinerary. “The museums are also a must-visit experience from the Modern Es Baluard to the Fundacio Miro, offering a unique, intimate immersion into one of the 20th century’s most influential artists,” says Homar.

Taking in a sunset from the Palma Cathedral together is a must for any couple, perhaps followed up by sampling tapas in the Santa Catalina neighborhood. “After a day of cultural exploration, Palma offers an array of top-tier gastronomy experiences. Travelers can look forward to an array of Michelin-starred experiences and unique concepts when visiting Palma specifically,” Homar says.

Honeymoon-Worthy Accommodation

Of course, a big part of any honeymoon is the accommodation, and Palma doesn’t disappoint there either. “97% of the beds are for four-star and five-star hotels, all of which feature restored palaces and residences that have been transformed into intimate, luxury stays,” says Homar. “Boutique properties like the adults-only Hotel Can Cera or Palma Riad offer the kind of privacy, design, and sense of place that honeymooners are increasingly seeking.”
