Los Cabos are located at the tip of Baja California Sur in Mexico. This bustling tourist destination is a popular venue for resort getaways and boasts world-class dining options, a myriad of golf courses and plenty of outdoor activities for all tastes. Los Cabos has become the second fastest-growing resort destination in Mexico and attracts many travelers during the winter months. You’ll find some of the best sport fishing spots around this part of Baja California, along with a variety of seasonal festivities and local attractions. Whether you’re visiting Los Cabos on a honeymoon, romantic getaway, or just enjoying a leisurely retreat with the family, you’re sure to find plenty of fun and interesting things to do around Los Cabos, Mexico.

Los Cabos’ history can be traced back to the early 16th century when Cortes’s navigator Francisco de Ulloa first discovered Cabo San Lucas. A pioneer by the name of Sebastian Vizcaino set up a pearl fishing colony in Cabo San Lucas in 1596 and was determined to become wealthy from the pearls lying in the waters around Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, his goal was misguided and he was sitting on a pearl-less bay called La Paz. During that same period in Los Cabos history, Spanish merchants had established a trading route from Luzon in the Philippines to Acapulco. They were shipping oriental silks, spices, Mexican gold and silver and English pirates soon set out to capture this silver and gold.

Most of Los Cabos served as a trading post for many years and it wasn’t until the late 19th century when the area was conceded to Mexico that the area became a popular vacation destination. By that time, there was no oil, gold, silver or even water to be found in the area. The United States didn’t want this unfertile desert ground and simply gave it up to the Mexicans. By World War II, a small group of Southern Californians found a way to fly to La Paz and found their way to the shores of Mar de Cortex. Ten years later, hotels and resorts were built and the area soon became a popular destination for Hollywood’s wealthy to escape for vacation.

Los Cabos’ economy was soon fueled by tourist dollars and attracted marlin fishermen and condo developers. More than 3,000 private residences were built specifically for vacationers and retirees, and golf courses, resorts and other tourist-friendly destinations were created to attract more visitors.

Today, Los Cabos continues to be a premier vacation destination for global travelers and offers several beautiful beach destinations to explore. Whether you’re interested in a private retreat or just want to enjoy some fun in the sun at a resort, you’ll find a wealth of unique places to explore throughout the area.
