Maldives Activities Travel Guide

Welcome to the Maldives Activities travel guide.

There's plenty to do in the Maldives but keep in mind that most of the activities in the area revolve around the sea, and absolute bliss. If you're visiting Maldives to relax and enjoy yourself, you won't be disappointed. Most of the villas in Maldives are mere steps from everything one may need in a vacation including restaurants, bars, beachside hammocks, sea, sand, scuba and dive sites, and just about anything else one could think of when it comes to the sea.

Most people spend their vacation time in Maldives simply enjoying the picturesque beaches with their soft white sand, perfectly blue water and bold tropical sun. You may find in your visit that all you want to do is sit and enjoy the scenery and the sun—and that's alright. However, if you find you're in for some additional fun while vacationing in Maldives, consider fishing, shopping, island hopping, watersports or a day at the spa to keep you having fun.

Fishing the Maldives lends to some great catches. Off the shore of the islets of the Maldives you'll catch Dorado, jackfish, shark, marlin, tuna and barracuda. At the end of the day, ask your resort chef to cook up your catch and truly enjoy all that the Maldives and it's vast sea has to offer.

Another popular activity in Maldives is diving. Dive sports are very attractive in the area and offer something fun for every type of diving enthusiast from beginner to avid diver. You can even snorkel the coral gardens merely meters from the beach. You'll find hundreds of different types of coral, marine life and fish in the Maldives—an underwater land that is sure to mesmerize you.

Shopping is limited in Maldives but one thing you will find is a selection of thuda kuna. Thuda kuna are locally woven mats that, aside from food, are the main souvenir that you'll find in Maldives. While there are gift shops and similar boutiques at the resorts or the airport in Maldives, most of the souvenirs are imported into the area and not original or locally created. You may find some designer jewelry or accessories in the area but it's important to note that it is illegal to export any accessories or jewelry that is made out of pearl oyster shell, black coral or red coral so keep your eyes open to ensure you don't purchase any of these items while shopping for souvenirs in Maldives.

Watersports are of course very common in a country that is made up of 99 percent water. Surfing in the Maldives, though not a mainstream sport, is fun and exciting. The prime surf season is from March through November when the waves are at their peak thanks to the change in seasons. Occasional international surf contests are held in Maldives attracting locals and those from around the world. Other watersports in the Maldives include windsurfing, water skiing, kite boarding, jet skiing and kayaking but you can also just swim the day away.

Overview

Most of the Maldives is located underwater, in fact, 99.9 percent of the are is underwater so it's no wonder that the Maldives are a diver's paradise. While there are many small islets that make up the country of Maldives, the area has no natural land that extends more than 2.3 meters above sea level so expect to spend much of your Maldives vacation either in the water—or just above it.
